If the NBA regular season wasn't exciting enough for most fans, an unexpected trade shook the basketball world this week. Since the announcement, fans and players have been trying to understand how one of the league's top players ended up being traded without any rumors circulating.

In the early hours of Saturday into Sunday, a trade involving the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz was announced. The Los Angeles Lakers received Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris from Dallas; the Dallas Mavericks received Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round pick from Los Angeles; and the Utah Jazz received Jalen Hood-Schifino and second-round picks from the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks.

What was most surprising about this trade is that the Dallas team made available none other than the franchise's best player and one of the league's top players. With Luka Doncic, the Mavericks won the Western Conference last season and reached the NBA Finals with the current champion Boston Celtics.

No one understood anything, how could a franchise's general manager give up his main player in exchange for a veteran who, despite his talent, was a supporting player in Los Angeles? Trades for younger players are understandable considering the future of the franchise, but trading one of the league's top scorers at 25 for a 31-year-old defender seems crazy.

Luka Doncic was not just a simple Dallas Maverick player, he was the face of the franchise, the player the franchise bet its future on and the one the fans identified with. At no point did the Slovenian show that he would consider playing for another team.

In an interview, the Mavericks general manager explained that Doncic was in the last year of his contract and could leave for another team the following year, but he didn't convince anyone. It is more likely that he has lost confidence in relation to the physical problems that the player has been presenting, but still the trade for Anthony Davis, who also has a history of injuries, does not make sense.

For Dallas Mavericks fans, and for practically everyone involved with the league, from players to journalists, the opinion is that it was the most absurd trade that an NBA team has ever made in History.

Ninguém entendeu nada, como o gerente geral de uma franquia abre mão do seu principal jogador em troca de um veterano, que apesar do talento, era coadjuvante em Los Angeles? Trocas por jogadores mais jovens são compreensíveis pensando no futuro da franquia, mas trocar um dos maiores pontuadores da liga aos 25 anos por um defensor de 31 anos parece loucura.

Luka Doncic não era apenas um simples jogador do Dallas Maverick, ele era a cara da franquia, o jogador que a franquia apostou seu futuro e que os torcedores se identificavam. Em nenhum momento, o esloveno demonstrou que cogitaria jogar em outra equipe.

Em entrevista, o gerente geral do Mavericks justificou que Doncic estava em seu último ano de contrato e poderia sair para outra equipe no outro ano, mas não convenceu. É mais provável que tenha perdido a confiança com relação aos problemas físicos que o jogador tem apresentado, mas ainda assim a troca por Anthony Davis, que também tem histórico de lesões, não faz sentido.
