South Canberra and Lake Burley Griffin meandering : March 28 2025
Today's ride plan heads to the south of Canberra and will loop around the bottom of Lake Burley Griffin. There were some riders in the group. I stayed at the back and walked a few spots to see if there were orchids
A good example - houses on one side - grassy area and bush likely to host orchids - none to be found
Next stop was a short walk on Mount Painter - walked this before
This segment is known for wild flowers - last of the paper daisies
Ground is too dry for orchids - best enjoy the views
Not seen this flower before
Distant view of the Brindabellas
Views of Black Mountain tower will feature as we loop around along the base and down into the south of Canberra
Reach the north side of Lake Burley Griffin - have cycled this path a lot over the years
You beaut surface - super smooth - lines not yet painted in
In all those rides past I have never gone up the hill to the arboretum. It was once a pine forest which was destroyed by fire. That was the catalyst to create an arboretum
The view up to our coffee stop - a great building with vaulted roof line with fab timbers
More angles back to Black Mountain
View across to the parliament district - new Parliament house is under the big triangular structure
Looking north back over the path we rode up - we came down a different way. Our map maker did a great job mapping 3 different routes for each day
Would be remiss not sharing a tree photo - the cones on this caught my eye - Norwegian spruce
The cones and Brindabellas behind
Looming cloud and Black Mountain - big rain coming overnight
Important events down this way - Bike Friday riders came by and the Prime Minister stopped in to announce the upcoming election - Governor-General's residence
Disc golf course laid out along the lake shore
A new display - white poles each with a picture and a name and some smaller than others
Memorial to a refugee bost that sank - names are all Arabic
A Japanese garden about the furthest point on the south side of the lake
New waterfront development - section to the right of the curved section was reclaimed from the lake
Last sector of the ride though the grounds of Australian National University - where my daughter went to uni.
Only ever came in to the theatre she did shows in. So this was all new - open day on made for lots of students wandering around
A ride done almost entirely on tracks I have ridden before.
My wife arrived from Sydney - we did a shopping trip back to the south side - all new spots. Found a great supermarket to source deli type food for dinner
Met up with the crew in the camp kitchen for drinks. Cooked a yummy pasta, cheese sauce, rocket and spinach and smoked salmon dinner.
