Tumut to Jugiong ride - car transfer to Canberra: March 26 2025
A big day ahead - 75 kms and 4 hills and 30C forecast - requires an early start. Ride route goes along the Tumut River until it meets the Murrumbidgee. Then we ride all along the south bank of that.
Early morning light on Wee Japser Road and then the left turn ahead to Brungle and the first climb of the day
View back to Tumut - airfield is down there - must be an interesting place to fly with mountains either side
Wide angle view from the same spot looking down to the river below
River below from a spot on the way up Mt Killimicat
Steep run down from the mountain - over cooked one corner but held on somehow. Killimicat Creek
Brungle signage - warming up. Rode on a bit further to where the rivers meet to take a break
At the junction - the Tumut River. Have stopped here on prior rides
Slower flowing Murrumbidgee
Our route goes left to follow the south bank. One rider split here to ride to Gundagai. He is charged with getting my glasses
Road rises up and away and down to the river giving good photo opportunities
Looking back down the valley- hill 2
More river angles with grand trees
Not far from the bridge crossing to go Coolac way - last chance to avoid the gravel section
Gravel ahead - riders stopped for lunch break there. 14 kms of gravel to go - all pretty level with the river
This road has a lot of cattle grids. I was surprised by the first one at the bottom of a hill. Was doing 65 kmh when I saw the sign. Bounced over that. The next one hurt. Walked them all after that. Gaps between the rails is a little less than the size of trailer wheels. Can just see the trailer hitch getting ripped out
I just kept pushing to get the gravel done. Next big hill is a thinly sealed road. Took some pushing and a rest half way up to get to the top. Pleased to be the first non-E bike up and over
The view back down from first rest stop
View from the top from whence we had come. There was one more pinch before we could declare victory and head back to the river. That pinch wiped out all of us. Too hot and one hill too far. We all gathered for a drink in cafe in Jugiong
Back to motel to pack bike into car and drive to Canberra - about an hour and a half drive. Body was tired - stopped for petrol on the way and got energy food. Made it safely to the caravan park
I have stayed here many times as my daughter was at University in Canberra. Headed on the bike to the shops and the local pub - Duxton Inn for beer and dinner. Feels like a local pub - students, parents, dogs, noise - and a magpie stealing food. Most local was the ride back in the dark on a secret path - not lit.
