3 orchid day in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - one new for the park : March 4 2025

Was supposed to rain - my friend shared a post from up the coast with a clear blue sky. That told me to get moving a little earlier than normal - idea - walk a track that offers midge orchids in the grassy areas and wasp orchids in the rainforest down on Cowan Creek.

Drove to walk Murrua Side trail and then down to the creek. Pine-leafed geebung to start

Banksia flower with a bit of a twist - something got in the way when it was growing - hence the fold

Peach-flowered tea tree

Seeded midge orchid

One open - fringed midge orchid

Corunastylis fimbriata

Hibbertia flower

2nd banksia type for the day

This tree caught my eye - there is vigorous leaf life yet the trunk is maybe only 15 percent of the original size

Bonnet orchid leaf - lots around - might get one flower still open

Lambertia formosa

Did find the chiloglottis orchids where I expected - a few flowering

Side on - chiloglottis seminuda

Always pays to photograph each flower in case there are differences - so far all the same - bare tipped wasp orchid

Location shot - where the 3 trails meet

Cowan Creek running hard after the big rain last night

A few more wasp orchids along the creek

Photo showing the leaves - two leaves on the ground opposed - smooth edges

Walked up to where Lovers Jump Creek meets Cowan Creek - water is churned a bit brown

Found more orchids on the way back - do not often see them this close to the creek. Flood water brings down nasty chemicals from the gardens above

Same type - chiloglottis seminuda

Love the detail - calli go halfway way down the labellum

There were leeches - always a few after the rain

Now for the hard walk - back up that ridge line - 300 metres up from the creek

Decided to walk back under the powerlines. Seen a few posts on a specific orchid which a friend saw that side a few years back - purple fan flower - right colour

Red spider grevillea

Hibbertia flower - a few going. Under the powerlines. At one of the owerlines there was pink tape going from the pylon to the bush next to the trail. That tells the track work team to not go into that section.

This milkwort was in that grassy bit. A bit further on were to little bushes with tape on. Decided to walk in from there - 7 paces and saw the flash of pink

And there is is - spiranthes australis- ladies tresses orchid. First time seen at low altitude and first time here

A few midge orchids growing here too

Makes for a bonus day - found more orchids than I had expected

Did not rain bit it was super humid - sweated soaked wet

Drifted the rest of the day somehow - watched a few Midjourney training videos- working my way to setting up a product launch - needs good images.

Cooked dinner - spaghetti bolognese

Did get the weekly investing post out https://mclnks.com/tib749
