Midge orchids revisited and from a 2nd track : February 19 2025
Got a different day lined up. Doing a midge orchid walk with two friends - they walk a lot but have never seen midge orchids. Heading back to the track I walked two days back in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP
Patersonia iris flowering late in the season
Part one of the mission was to see the opening of this brittle midge orchid - was budding last walk - now open
Genoplesium baueri - the 2nd plant flowering well - an endangered orchid
Next up a fringed midge orchid - corunastylis fimbriata
In the middle of the track - Rupp's midge orchid - not totally convinced of ID
This is more clear to ID - very much corunastylis ruppii
Pink grevillea
Lichen patch in just one spot on the track
Turned around at the end of the grassy sections - came off track a bit - Sydney boronia flowering late
That detour offered up this little blue flower - milkwort
Found a cluster of orchids - Rupp's midge orchid and fringed midge orchids growing right next to each other- side by side photo was poor
Cicada husk perfectly preserved
Seeded midge orchid - hard to ID - cannot see any remnant fringes and colour is too green for corunastlyis ruppii
Got bee action on the Peach-flowered tea tree flower
Started down Kalkari Track - fab spider posed
Case moth encasement
Butterfly posed in zoom distance
St Andrews Cross spider
Found a few more midge orchids in the grassy sections - spotted a tiny yellow spot at the top of the midge orchid. Tough work getting focus and colour. The yellow is yellow bright - washed out in the photo. The fly is half a match head in size
The ladies enjoyed the walk. As it was an early start, drove down to walk Grosvenor St fire trail to see if bunny orchids have started.
First up - a neat mushroom
NSW coral heath flower - never tire of photographing these - they are so delicate and precise
Mini pea flower
First midge orchid on this track this season - budding
Flowering fringed midge orchid
Time to look for pollinators - tiny flies
Stepped back photo
A few close ups to get a few detail angles
Found a lot of midge orchids coming up in the area that was burned last season
Easy to see the dark colours 2 inches above ground where all the grass is gone - ID has me confused - colours do not match corunastylis ruppii
A few angles
Step back on the next one - yellow tips are ruppii
Two tracks and a bunch of orchids - pleased with that
Did shopping on the way back home
Watered all the lawns we top soiled at the weekend- photo of the walking lilies planted below our patio. Two plants with half a dozen runners. All started from one runner I nicked in Queensland in 2019
Dinner: Thai Green chicken curry
