Wasp orchids from Blackbutt Creek plus new IM: February 16 2025

Got a part day lined up. My wife has stuff to help her son with and his son is with him. Did shopping first - walk up for a few things

We went down there. Ollie was asleep when we got there. Was not is a friendly mood when he woke up. No photos.

Went walking when we got home - down to Blackbutt Creek. One of the tree trail signs calling this Old Man Banksia - I have only ever known it by its Latin name

The sign. Into the bush in search of chiloglottis orchids - saw one open last week

Lots of leaves showing - two opposed on the ground

A few flowers open - chiloglottis seminuda - clue is calli come down the labellum part way. Plant stands short of two inches high and flower is 3 match heads long and 2 wide

Side on. Often called turtle orchid - looks like a turtle with head out

Study the similarity and the difference

A bit more from top down. All are consistent with the others

Situation photo - seeds settle in the moss on an almost vertical face and start their journey there

Study of the leaves - some have smooth edges and some are a little serrated

A few more on the way back - same

This one is a challenge - the calli are forming a semi-circle around the middle. Could well be a differentiator - chiloglottis sylvestris - forest wasp orchid. Often found together

One last one - good to find around 10 flowers open. Cannot recall seeing that many last year. The seasons are moving on
