Artarmon to Flat Rock Creek walk : February 13 2025
Was hoping to get out a bit take the bike out earlier to look for midge orchids. The morning got away from me and was not in the mood to wrestle with bike-train thing. Had lunch a little early and caught the train south
Walked past this mural in Artarmon a few times. Path runs through the park close to where my wife's lives.
The area has strong Aboriginal connections captured in the art
Target is the blue bit. Mural has a clue as to where I ended up walking. Did not do the blue bit
Flowers along the way - in the bush
And along the road - flowering gum
Path follows Flat Rock Creek - classic Sydney sandstone cliffs
Pea flowers twining upwards
Creek on one side and freeway on the other. Not exactly idyllic and the bits of bush are riddled with garden escapee plants
Old house and new town houses hard by the creek and in the shadow of the highway.
Flowering grevillea - not an escapee

...and the rocks are flat
A bit of art - 3 sided block with 3 ages of the Aboriginal story - the early days - lots of wildlife and a few people
More people but none in hats - hats came with the settlers
And then they built the roads and the bridges
Did get to walk a rougher track along the creek edges before landing out on the roads again
View across the creek to St Leonards - my starting point was to the right of that. Could walk to those buildings to get a train home
A few run down houses left - just a few - this was the worst but the grass has been mowed
Decided not to walk down to the water - a long way down a d a big hill back. Perfectly level North Brisge to cross to walk up to Crows Nest
2nd gateway and then up the hill. Started jumping around about where to get a train - the new Metro at Crows Nest or the train at St Leonards.
Interesting cemetery at the top of the hill with the Sexton Cottage, now a museum. Bodies were laid here before internment - and the hospital is just further up the hill
Alexander Berry built this pyramid mauoleum for his wife - he is interred in the surrounding wall
Grand eucalyptus standing watch over the obelisk.
Made the St Leonards station choice - no change of train needed.
Landed up as a big walk. Parts of it were quiet - too much walking along roads - no grand views of the water. Next time - take the bike as the footpaths were all good and flattish. Ride out and back with a few loops.
Dinner: My wife had had a work lunch - so I did simple sausages bbq for me. Turned into late night working on a product relaunch. Review tomorrow - perhaps.
