First visit to Kamay Botany Bay NP : February 7 2025

Lining up for another different day. Our visitors are picking up their camper van on the other side of Sydney and looking to spend their first night the other side of Newcastle. Did a shopping walk first up.

Simplest model was for me to drove them to Taren Point to give my wife time to do work things. Dropped them off and watched them check the van. Left them to get moving and drove down to Kurnell

Drove up to entrance of Kamay Botany Bay NP. Walked in from the entrance. Captain Cook landed here. Kamay is the Aboriginal name for Botany Bay

Walks mapped out to Cape Solander - my plan is to walk a shorter loop. Not walked here at all. Hope to find an orchid

Short loop is Banks Solander walk - Joseph Banks was the botanist who travelled with Captain Cook. Banksia named after him

A characteristic in these littoral forests are the cabbage palms. Our estate on the South Coast is called Coastal Palms - got a few of those down there

Spied these super long orchid leaves - the burgundy stalks tell me to look for bonnet orchids

Sure enough there was one plant flowering and standing tall. The rainforest is short of light - the leaves and flower stalks work hard to get light = grow tall

Found one seeded further along - always like to find two plants flowering

Got back to Yena Trail - time a bit short and really hot to walk further

Another 30 minutes - for another cooler day

A little mushroom action - the perfectly formed ball

And the shape when they start to flatten out

Took a side track thinking it was the loop of the track I was on

Did proffer up a quite differently coloured mushroom

Well the side track did not loop and went to the road. It went past the depot - took a bit of thinking about which way to go. That way - car is parked there under the flightpath

Have a feeling this cafe was in a few movie scenes doen this way - sadly gone - no lunch for me

Traffic home was diabolical - good thing I went as my wife would have missed all her meetings. 40 minutes out and double that back.

Good news is the boys did leave on my urging and made it to Stockton Beach, north of Newcastle. And I got to walk an NP not walked before and there were orchids

Dinner: Italian meatballs

Watched a movie for a while - did get emails out for the product launch
