Ku-ring Gai locales midge orchid hunting : January 15 2025
Another hot day on the way hotter than yesterday - forecast to get over 40C. Another car ride to go midge orchid hunting - two ideas. Ku-ring Gai Wildflower Garden and Bobbin Head Trail in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP.
Garden first with a specific search for brittle midge orchid. First up - narrow leafed hemigenia. Happy to get a good photo on a windy day
Last time I was here this plant was just budding. It is where the midge orchids grow. Slender hyacinth orchid now flowering
Fully flowering in a deeper colour than the others seen lately
Close up - dipodium variegatum
View from the lookout - scribbly gums lost their bark. No joy finding the midge orchids - not even a spike
Did find one other orchid. Last flower on a tongue orchid - cryptostylis subulata.
Headed off to North Turramurra to try my luck there - different midge orchids - 3 possible types
A few purple fringe lilies flowering. None the day before
Mimosa flowering
Leptospermum squarrosum
Peach-flowered tea tree stretching out across the track
More fringe lilies
Least-yellow oxalis - creeps along the ground and clusters
Interesting patersonia iris - this is the front flower of a dual headed flower. Not seen one like that before. Double head photo was out of focus
Pine-leafed geebung with a few flowers open at the bottom
Close up of open flowers
Conesticks flowering - no bugs
Grey spider grevillea - good light for the photo
Talking of good light - perfect backing for this grass seed
A triplet of narrow leafed hemigenia - had to hold the spike in the wind
Paler purple fringe lily
Pink grevillea with bugs
Close up - some kind of wasp is my guess
Banksia serratum flower ending its journey
Disturbed a swamp wallaby - it moved and then stopped to watch. Not often does one get a pose
Saw these white spots on the eucalyptus leaves that were attracting ants. Not sure whether they are harvesting or building or storing
Found a snake orchid off track not far from where I used to park my bike. Only found it as I saw a cicada caught in a spider web
There was another cicada higher in the web being fed on by a big fat orb weaver spider. Photo against the light was poor - deleted.
A different leptospermum close to where there was once a building. It is a lemon scented tea tree which is native but is also used for essential oils. Could be an escapee from then
Close up. Walk done - no sign of midge orchids. Not a great fan of hot and sweaty. Takes ages for the body to cool down.
Spent thr afternoon doing investing accounts and creating an email funnel GPT. It will craft a funnel for a business you choose. Amazing but feels leas than useful. More work needed.
Dinner: Airfryer chicken drumsticks and veges and potatoes 3 ways
Investing: Adjusted a bunch more sold puts ahead of options expiry

The way the ants covered the leaves actually looks nice
