Tallship day on Sydney Harbour : November 23 2024
We have a different day lined up. We have a lunch time cruise on Sydney Harbour on a tall ship called Ooosterschelde built 107 years ago and hailing from Rotterdam
Flying the Dutch flag. The James Craig tied up behind
Ship is tied up just below my wife's office. Drive in. Park. Get water and be ready for boarding. Tied up close to Pyrmont ferry heading off under the bowsprit
View foreward to Crown Casino in Barangaroo
Flying the Australian ensign high in the rigging. Visitor respect
Was a while before we left. Captain had different times to us. Time to get photos. Spares sails and the one life boat. Can only assume it gets launched by a lot of rope hauling. That is the way it works here
Galley stairwell has a painting of the ship in full sail - we did not get that
Location shot - life belt and Maritime Museum
Stern view of James Craig tied up aft. It parks forward - we turn in to face out forwards
Engine control - all in Dutch. Loved the use of langzaam - literally translated means patiently
Compass in housing
Another context photo - Sky Tower above the life ring
Sky Tower and Barangaroo. The latter was built since Covid-19
Turning out from the Pyrmont wharf buildings into the main line of the Parramatta River
View foreward to the Harbour Bridge - under engine power going into the wind
SS Waratah came by to have a look. She is part of Sydney Heritage Fleet - guessing it is a steam powered ferry
Good picture of the captain Jan Willems with the Dutch flag behind. A very relaxed man on top of his job
A different view of the underside of Harbour Bridge through the rigging
A few more photos through the rigging - a passing yacht. The blue water and blue sky makes contrast work really well
Looping past the Navy base
RoRo supply ship - L100 gives the name
A few more navy shots - destroyer is my guess
No jump ships in sight - there is normally one
Passing Pinchgut on the way out to Watson's Bay side of the harbour on the south side. We then turned across the heads and raised the sails. I helped - not hard work on a mild wind day. Was fab watching the young crew work - no yelling and scrawny men using leg strength to do the work
Mizzen sail up
Fore sail up - the young man in the photo is a tallship tragic doing phots for the trip. His first tattoo - a tall ship
Rounding the HMAS Sydney memorial St Bradley's Head
Foresail filling in the wind
Through the rigging view of the Opera House
Topsail open
Sydney Harbour Bridge ahead and still under sail
A bit of jet boat fun. Every boat wanted to come close for photos
Harbour Bridge view firm underneath the shade awning - was good to have some shade cover on a warm day
View to Opera House and the city - wind easing and water a lot calmer
Waratah came to visit again blowing its steam horn
Detailed view of the mast rigging. A series of rings of timber - goanna guess banmoo - that circle the last and allow free movement. Modern yachts have a runnel cut into the mast. The beauty of this is it will probably allow a jibe - ship goes all around the wind and not through the wind. Rigging would be a mess with ropes needing to be moved across the other side
As we pulled into our wharf this old ferry tootled up inside. I guess they knew we were doing a big loop and parking forward. Looked cheeky.
Tying up. Imagine working somewhere like this. As long as there is a coffee shop nearby - feels good. My wife likes it - week 4 in the role
As we finished up one of the small wooden cutters headed out from the museum. Ended a fab trip worth every dollar of the fee. Can safely say I will not be signing up for one of the 3 months stints the crew do. Living conditions are tight and one sounds most of the time wet and cold
Dank je wel - Oosterschelde en die manskap
Quick BBQ dinner at home and went out 4to see Three Italian Tenors with friends. On their 6th tour of Australia with one new singer. He was the best. Chat is good. Humor is good. Songs are good. A bit of a hoot heating Waltzing Matilda and I like to call Austalia home from an overseas group.
No photos as the phone hates the lights and will not focus
