Ride around Coolangatta Mountain: October 5 2024

Spent the morning doing investing accounting stuff. Plan for the day is to ride around Coolangatta Mountain and walk at the end in Seven Mile Beach NP to look for orchids

Wind was strong - chose to ride into the wind for the first 6 kms and then head along Broughton Creek on Back Forest Road. First photo at the boat ramp on Broughton Creek

Looped back to my routine walking spot in Seven Mile Beach NP. Plan was to walk until I found an orchid in flower. Australian native violet is part of the furniture walking here

Did find some orchids. Ten days ago on the track I counted 120 open on one side - just a few now. Photo work is a bit easier when there is a contrast with the white calli

Now for the real task - ID - colours are different but structures are the same - variants of caladenia catenata

Lichen to change the perspectives

A little more depth down the back of the labellum shows the yellow calli - might suggest a different hybrid

Next one is different - flatter shape and carmine bands - thinking caladenia hilmanii

The way the hybrids go makes ID work really hard.
