New corners of Killara and Gordon - architecture history time : August 29 2024
Turned into a slow day. Headed to bed sometime after midnight. My wife was sprawled right across the middle of the bed - no space for me. Was not going to wake her. Couch it was - crap sleep - till she got up
Slow day makes for not wanting to do stuff. Did go walking heading east into Killara to walk a bit more widely than before. No idea what this flower is.
A house a bit further down Greengate Rd for sale - two in the street for sale. Photshop photo does not match what is behind the fence
That got me looking at the other old houses in the street. Single story - twin chimneys - sandstone footings
Always possible to make a flower theme - camellia
Azalea time too
Nice tidy house with oyster cladding painted
A few old houses here looking unoccupied or not cared for. This lawn says more than the ramshackle house. The mower has been walked around the fresias growing in the lawn
A few tidy houses in the old style. Low sloping roof. Wonder if it was designed thst way or adjusted when the dormer room went in upstairs
A little more clear what changed here - went up at the back with a dormer extension
Looped around the opposite way to the wat I walked last time. This sign is at the bottom of the cut through. Did walk past Harry Seidler Reserve on the way down - no photo. The name is an important name
Why? Harry Seidler is a famous architect who designed blocky houses. This is one. I just joined the dots
Just below the Harry Seidler house is this old quarry - started in 1880s for riad gravel. Taken out of service a 100 years later - now a park
Looking south east
View to houses above
A contrast photo - cabbage tree palm below and huge eucalyptus tree above
Dropped down to the road below and walked to the end of the dead end. Not walked this far. Photo is of the end of the road which runs into Eastern Arterial - walk or bike access
A nice quiet neighbourhood despite the busy arterial road above
Grand houses - noise goes over the top
Lily time
No orchids in the bush remnants I walked past - git to make do with garden cymbidiums
A grand display. There were a few like it in the garden quite happy to be out in the sun
A mix of garden flowers down this way - native grevillea
Exotic bromelliad
One more sale board down a quiet dead end and well away form the arterial road
A grand house been through some change. Going to guess it started as a single story. Then they did the 2nd story. Then they added the section on the right which is where the shared lounge room areas are - one side old style and the other modern
Walked back past the Gordon tennis courts and park when the ice cream van arrived. Tunes were going as it came down the hill. Did the U-turn and came back. The kids were racing for ice cream on a warm day
Got the steps done walking further along roads I have walked. Gave me a way to get to a bush walk avoiding some hilly and busy bits
Dinner: Penang curry with chicken - my wife cooked. I did the rice

The old houses on the street are not even looking very old
They look nice
I love your environment
Old in Australian suburb terms is 70 to 80 years - back - just before and after World War 2
Camellia flowers are very beautiful and houses are very expensive. Many great posts and very well described pictures. Well done
