First Wasp Orchids from Blackbutt Creek : August 25 2024
Wake to a cloudy day with rain in the forecast. Got busy writing up the investing stuff from last week. Friday was a huge day up for uranium which lifted the frame of mind a lot. Also made some headway on the IM promotion. Have been using to test out a product being launched on August 26 - AI Millionaire
Been putting walking down to Blackbutt Creek. Takes 15 minutes there and back again. I do miss the 400 metres in the old place. Nice line of spring blossoms - the rest of the photos come from the bush - promise
A day for pea flowers - hardenbergia - hard to decide where to focus. I think the camera decided up the back was good .
Yellow pea flower with quite a large leaf - new for the season
Oxalis most likely escaped from the gardens above
Loved this imagery of the new fern leaves unfolding above the old
These flowers are tiny - maybe two of those plastic pinheads across but they do make a splash
Not a lot of mushrooms around - this one on a fallen dead branch
Been walking this track since November. Seen these chiloglottis leaves every walk - still not budding. It gives me a clue to ID
Hakea flower
New flower emerging with attendant ant. No idea what it is
Also new in star shape. Will look up some names when I have time
Grevillea with a tinge of pink
Slender rice flower - always a challenge for focus
More signs of spring - think it is eriostemon
A different pea flower with a smaller flower and smaller leaf than the previous one
Had seen this cluster of buds last week - it is one of the small sun orchids. They like the rocky abode
This was the walk mission - last week buds - this week open for the first time for me on this track - eastern wasp orchid
Key other ID is splayed labellum with calli coming down to the tip - chiloglottis formicifera
Normally the ladies I meet are keen to see orchids - not this one - she zipped by though she did say hello
Found many open - took photos of them all to be sure of standard ID and to get angles. This from above
Four in frame also showing the leaf. It is a little serrated - I am not expert enough or patient enough to say if it's the same as the first leaf shown. What I do know is this spot is more sunny than the other
Photo a little from behind - looks the same to me
Close up of one budding with two pairs of leaves below
Over the shoulder view
On this the calli are not as far down and the flower is a little more upright. That could be important for ID
A flash of tiny in white
This is where things get different. The labellum is less arrow shaped and the calli only go half way
Side on
Matching leaf - bigger and smooth edged
Some calli to halfway
And none - not enough to say it is chiloglottis trapeziformis - will ask the gurus
Sundew flower to end the walk
Good to fund the wasp orchids open and it did not rain on me
Dinner: Chicken cashew stir fry Chinese style
Did get the blog post out

Oxalis looks very beautiful
It’s my first time seeing it and it didn’t disappoint
Love it!
Oxalis has about 550 species of plants in the wood-sorrel family of which about 20 are native to Australia. The plant spreads quite widely and is often found in the bush as an escapee from the gardens nearby. Pretty but not what we want to see in the bush.
I'm very familiar with most of these plants and flowers.
You really had nice time snapping all those 👌
Beautiful flowers some of which I don't know, The photography is beautiful I must say
