Comerong Island greenhoods : August 19 2024
Was a slow day. By the time I was ready ti go out riding I did not feel like riding 17 km round trip to explore the far section of Seven Mile Beach. Took the short bike ride option with the long walk
Ride down to the river and walk to Comerong Island - glad I took the mountain photo on the way out. Sun was low when I got back
Leptsospermum squarrosum flowering where I parked my bike - new for the season
One way of dealing with the flood timbers - build huts. The O&M guy in me is working out if one could build this solo
The logs form quite an obstacle. Hard to cross - stood on one and it rolled. Took a while to get free
So much for the lazy way out - over 5,000 steps to get to where there is any flora of interest
The obligatory native violet
Mushroom season is over but there are still some fungal forms showing
Did know I would find greenhoods - blunt-tipped greenhood - new flower in a spot seen last walk
The twisted labellum is key to ID. Did check every one
Budding form. Did find a few more colonies - game of light for photos
Light behind and shaded light
Maybe a puffer type mushroom - a few in frame
Took the fork to the left down to the beach - not walked that before. There are orchids up the right. Maybe get lucky this side
Found this budding orchid quite close to the beach - first orchid down this track
More fungal form on a fallen tree
Made it to the beach - plenty of timber here too. Looking south to Crookhaven Heads
Looking north to Gerroa
Heading back the orchids were on the East side of the track - greenhood rosettes
Now for the ID challenge - greenhoods vs maroonhoods - toss up between pterostylis erecta and pterostylis oblonga. Front on might even be pedunculata
Side on - shorter helmet - maybe pterostylis oblonga
Front on is similar to the other
Side on - the helmet is longer. This is where confusion reigns - pterostylis erecta
Front on - very long sepals
Blunt-tipped greenhood just after rejoining the main track - next time - look left to start
Context photo shows the fork in the track
Back to this game - ID - probably erecta
A little angle to catch the labellum
Fungus time on a fallen tree
And on the standing trees - love the shaping on the V
This crab stood its ground. Disappointed that the photo is out of focus a bit as the crab stood still. Normally they skedaddle
This photo captures the edge of the littoral rainforest - the edge of the river estuary
Short ride. The walk was well over 12k steps - so much for the lazy way
Friends came over for dinner - bbq'ed a fillet bought from the pop up store at home. Way cheaper than the supermarket and helping young team and a Victorian farmer
Was yum
Trade action: Swapped out two Japanese chips stocks for a Japanese semiconductor ETF. Also bought GLO.TO on news. Wrote all the covered calls for the month = a late night

I'm very familiar with the timber built but.
We used to do that at farm which serves as our resting place when sun is high... Good old days😘.
The beach looks abandoned
So much timber - plenty of huts emerging. The section of the beach I was on is 4 kms walk along the beach from the village access points - nobody down there on weekdays and not many on weekends. The fatbikes do ride down that way on weekends too. Makes for a quiet place to wander.

The first photo is very beautiful and sparkling nature. You might enjoy it. Really amazing photography
Nice enjoyable time of day to be outdoors hunting orchids and finding much more along the path. Have an amazing day!
We have an early spring - good to be out and about. Making good use of the days here - back to Sydney tomorrow
Don't think we had winter bar a couple of days with snow inland, West coast wet and frigid Eastern side blazers hot. Today 32C tomorrow back down to 20C so the show goes on... Flowers opening with birds exceptionally active, definitely change is to warmer weather again.
