New season rainforest greenhoods : July 24 2024
Had a big plan to get out earlier on the bike to cover 3 segments of Seven Mile Beach NP as we are going back to Sydney tomorrow. Made that an action by doing a snack lunch and heading out to the Beach Road access to the national park. Stopped at the 5 km mark on a side track as have seen nodding greenhoods there in earlier years. None but it did give me a break - body is not up to long hard riding
Climbing vine
Got a long way to climb
Always a native violet to show
First sight of a nodding greenhood. None found yesterday. Got to say today was a hard day to get focused photos - ride was a bit harder than done for a while
Part of the mission was to check progress of blunt greenhoods - rosette
This was a big colony - nothing budding and being overtaken by the native violets. They are the rounder leaves with serrated edges
Found more nodding greenhoods further along the track
Found a new colony of blunt greenhoods further along the track than I have seen
Matching rosette
2nd part of mission was to find maroonhoods. Last found with the nodding greenhoods - found them on the way back. Found a few more colonies before reaching the park. Then crossed over to south side
Was hoping these would be open in a known spot - rainforest greenhood
Got a feeling this is a hybrid as it has the twist in the labellum common in pterostylis curta - colour of the ridge days no and sepals do not extend past the helmet
Pterostylis hildae. Why suspect a hybrid? The curta are in the same cluster
Matching rosette
Nodding greenhood this side with an ant pollinator. Not the best at that job as they cannot fly
Got on the bike and stopped at a section where alamanac had said I found pterostlyis nana two seasons back
They were growing with these trim greenhoods - pterostylis concinna
Maybe - next time - budding and all the concinna are done
Did check on progress of blunt greenhoods seen last week - at least 10 budding
Step back a bit
Next photo has a story. I know about this site of tall greenhoods - bunochilus longifolia. They snap shut if they get disturbed. In the long grass, I managed to trigger quite a few. Good thing there were 10 plants open
A bit of zoom work. I watched the lower flower pop. The top one stayed open - whew!
Longest ride in a while. Hard work into the wind going out. Easier on the way back.
Dinner: Fried rice - no photos
Trade action: Bought GLO.TO after their private placement smashed price
