Blackbutt reserve and old time Killara quarry : July 8 2024
Late night watching Tour de France and a grey raining day makes for a slow start. Finished off working up the weekly investing post. Did walk up to shops to get a few things and pushed off the weekly shop till tomorrow.
Did go out for the proper walk to explore a new segment of streets that I touched on a few days ago - exploring cycling routes. First photo of new lilies just starting to show
Last time the trees were in autumn colours - now bare
Double camellia time
One of the grand old Killara houses complete with front garden statue
Love the old style houses
Signage at the street corner I touched last walk - a reserve to preserve the terrumbine trees. It is the Aboriginal word for what we call blackbutt
Wattle flowers - a bit early
Grevillea with its spidery arms
Was hoping to find winter orchids along the creek edges - high enough above the flood levels. Did find lots of native violets - they seem to out compete the orchids
This looks like a violet too - more likely a.
garden escapee
A few more grand homes on this super quiet road. Maybe a little damp this low down in the winter
View down the road shows the quiet - creek along the road and houses above
Imagine the serenity
This is the oldest blackbutt tree - sign says at least 400 years ago and more than 50 metres tall. Sign also said 6 children with arms outstretched will be able to touch fingers
My wife walked this way a few years ago and had a picture taken of her outstretched arms - cool recollection
Took this path off the road to Quarry Reserve - not walked it before
This is the quarry - maybe 100 metres square and 70 metres high. It is a prismatic sandstone quarry - one can see the sheer edges of the cuts
Crucifix orchids at the entrance - not native
A fair bit of sandstone in the big house above. Maybe it came from the quarry - not as keen edged though
More traditional brick style from the 30s - a bit of an apartment look. Easy to convert that way
Some architects knew better and had more style
Also with some timber framing. Sure hope we can preserve some of these old houses. Look out for tomorrow's post to see what us happening the other side of the highway
The small flash of red caught my eye. Seen these before - happy with the photo - not my macro camera.
Turned into a bigger walk to get past 10k steps.
Dinner: Spaghetti bolognese
Trade action: Sold NNE. Bought CCJ. Options trades on SMR, NXE, LTBR, UUUU. Investing some of the NNE profits
