Blue Gum Walk and its orchids : June 25 2024

(Edited)

Busy morning on a blue sky day writing up last week's investing stuff. Went out late to catch a train to Hornsby to walk to the Blue Gum Walk - 10 minutes from the station

Hornsby station photo taken over the fence

Corner photo of the Railway Hotel - good spot to stop on the way back after a hard walk

The old style buildings in the High Street are falling into disrepair.

Access to the track I wanted to walk was closed because of helicopter operations in the quarry below. Found a way to walk above and around

Mushroom season - plenty to come this time of year

Found the track after a diversion along the MTB trail - heading down hill

Heaps of steps. Have only cycled or driven down the other side. It is steep

The heritage steps were built after the Great Depression in 1929. The bronze book forms carry the story

View down across the Sydney blue gums

The story of the blue gums - they grow tall and straight. Sad part is only 5% are left standing

Tiny mushroom on a long stalk. Might be a black parachute mushroom

Knew I would find orchids. As the start was late and light dropping had it in my mind to stop at one. Bristly helmet orchid - corysanthes fimbriatus in a big cluster. Not expected - kept walking to explore two known types

Pixie caps orchid - two plants flowering - light was low for a good photo

Orchid 3 for the day - acianthus exsertus - first for the season. Narrower helmet and only a few calli on the labellum

Coral fungus

Nodding greenhood found off track - knew where to look - pterostylis nutans

Larger mushroom form - just under saucer size. Mate coming up behind

Bright white mushroom - the size of an Aussie 50 cent piece

Pushed on a bit further to check on chiloglottis colony. No flowers but a posed photo with mini mushrooms

Did mention the blue gums like to grow tall and straight

Next new orchid find - tall greenhood. Not seen them here before

Light was low for good focus - bunochilus longifolia

Losts of these greenhoods showing form - way more than previous years. One budding - blunt greenhood - pterostylis curta

Context photo. Each time I see the signs for Great North Walk, I formulate plans to walk it. 260 kms at 4 km/h feels like 65 hours - 6 hours a day - two weeks. Better plan is to break it up into 3 or 4 day sections with motel stays and and access to train stations to get home between sections. Time of year - choose for orchids. First time I have done any calcs

Last photo from top of Hertage Steps to setting sun

Dinner: Spaghetti bolognese using Farm to Fridge mince - worked out well.

Did get the weekly investing post done

Find the right angle for a photo and one can see the original platform buildings. Helps to be tall ehough to get camera above the fences

Thanks. Picture taking and storytelling go hand in hand. Every day I go out I am looking - looking. I see a frame - snap a picture and then start looking for similar frames to get the story running. Photography is about words and pictures for me
