Tough Day - the bush and cooking helped : June 18 2024
Heading for a different day. Starting with the funeral for Alan Stephenson "The Orchid Man" who got me interested in orchid spotting. There was a chance for us to speak. My message was a 4 hour walk turned into a 10 year passion
Did run a little late getting to the service - worthy of a photo - the train taking product away from the Manildra plant
Plan was to meet my son - the placenhe had in mind was closed. I went walking local to where he lives
Found a wetlands walk at the bottom end of the suburb he lives in
Was a day for reflections - little did I know
No wind day
A photo in two parts - the reflection
And the source
The notices about orchids around here - up above
And down below for spring
Down to the end of the boardwalk where Cockrow Creek meets the canal
Vine time on the way back
Fab to have a boradwalk like this into the heart of the wetlands - no mud and no leeches
Naked lily on the way you back - hard to photograph
Not sure what this grand building was at the Sanctuary Point Oval - maybe the old showgrounds
Drove down to St Georges Basin side - moon rising over the basin
Island view
Pier under repair = euphemism for nothing going on here
Into the dropping sun
Did get a message from my son. He had walked down to where I had been. We walked a bit with his dog. The young man has seen challenges. Those melted down when I dropped him off at his home. I did not go in. I left him with the jumper my friend and my wife had knitted for him. He was not nice - I know what I do in cases like this. Time will tell. It was a bad lead in to my 68th birthday
Drove home hacked off. Stayed safe. Myb wife had walked over to neighbours - that gave me a chance to wind down. Next chance was to cook dinner - my therapy. Italian meatballs from meat sourced from a new Farmer to Fridge service
Roll up the mince with chopped onion, salt and pepper, Italian herbs and one egg. Fry until browned - set aside
Saute with a little olive oil in sequence - onion and celery, capsicum and garlic
Add in a can of chopped tomatoes and a beef stock cube and a dash of more Italian style herbs - be free with what you have
Thicken up with a few tablespoons of tomato paste. Check the seasoning and add now. Let it reduce a bit
Pop in the meatballs and spoon the sauce over. Serve with pasta and a side salad
Got to say the cooking did a lot to calm mu mind. Going to take a lot of days before I can talk with my son.
Stayed away from markets

Looks like a really tough day for you brother, but it's great how nature and cooking can provide such a sense of peace. Your meatballs recipe sounds very very delicious and therapeutic, definitely a perfect way to end the day. Wishing you all the best
Thanks - cooking has become therapy too

You had a long day though but I’m glad you at least saw your son so that should at least make you happy and I love the pictures of the dishes too
