Greenhoods found off track in Seven Mile Beach NP : August 4 2023
Wake to a clear blue sky day. A bit slow to get moving with just a few trades to write up. Headed out for a short ride to walk the middle section of Seven Mile Beach NP. Ride the main road to a park marker and then walk into the track that runs parallel to the road.
Saw the back of this orchid between the road and the track - blunt-tipped greenhood has not seen a human. Only wallabies walk here
A bit of work to get around to the front side - pterostylis curta
Twins
A colony of these greenhoods in the same open patch - hard to ID from the side.
The best I could get of the labellum - probably trim greenhood - pterostylis concinna
Greenhood number 3 between the road and the track - nodding greenhood. Pterostlyis nutans
Parked the bike up and headed north further than I have ever walked. First orchid up is trim greenhood.
Working around to get to see the labellum
Forked labellum says pterostylis concinna
Twining glycine is a tough photo as the flower is really small
Nodding greenhoods are coming into their own
Twins in the back row
Did find one pixie caps orchid open. Only one
Acianthus fornicatus
Stages of nodding greenhoods - wilting and fully open
Pterostylis nutans
Three in frame
The early stages shows the sepals not extending past the helmet. Proximity of the other nutans tells these are nutans too
This greenhood brings an ID challenge. The sepals do not go up as high as the concinna.
Front on shows the labellum does not have the fork. So it is not concinna - becomes a toss up between erecta and oblonga. This is an area for much argument - I am leaning to oblonga based on photos from my local guide book
Map shows the plan - ride to a spot on the main road - walk in to the track and walking either direction. Met some locals on the south side. They loved the orchid lesson
Was a fab day out like an early summer day at 24C
Dinner: Pizza from scratch on GF bases
Trade action: Bought MAH.AX, SGLLV.AC, SMR.
