New Season Helmet Orchids : May 15 2023
Wake to a blue sky day. My wife headed off into the city. Somehow frittered the morning away - a few house chores. Wrote up a slice of the week's investing and the blog post.
Took the lazy way for a walk. Drove down to Empire Marina to walk Warrimoo Track looking for autumn orchids especially greenhoods
Maybe better described as a mushroom walk - delicate white fringes
Brown caps
A bit more like an island beach hut
Did find promise of helmet orchids - probably spurred helmet orchid
Lyre bird walked in front scratching at the track - got a silhouette photo
Budding mosquito orchid.
The walk was punctuated by sound. The tide was running in - so lots of fish splash as they chased food coming upstream. Clicking sound of oysters as they opened and shut as the water came up. Lots of bird sound. And all the way, the lyre bird on the other bank doing its mimic thing
The sand flats is where some of the noise was coming from
Epacris longifolia always on this track almost all year around
New shoots
Budding greenhood - maybe nodding greenhood
Budding cobra greenhood - pterostylis grandifloris
Banksia. Was going to turn around before the 3rd ridge as it is short of orchids. Decided to walk to the cliff and back. Just short of the cliff found these
This is a rare photo chance with no human intervention. The flower on the right has pushed up on the flower on the left and folded over. So we can see inside the helmet of the corybas aconitiflorus. Normally one has to engineer these photos.
Was a nice cluster of spurred helmet orchids.
Kept walking under the rock face and up above saw this
Tom Cats orchid - cestichis reflexa - known spot
More mushroom action - turned around a lot further than originally planned
One of those puff mushrooms
On the way back found the colony of toothed helmet orchids flowering - four or five flowers
Bud forming
Front on. Best part of using a phone is photographer does not have to be behind the camera. Good thing here as his feet would have been in the water.
Top down view of the colony
Photo up the slope - corybas pruinosus
Always amazed at the mushroom variety
Easy to get an underside photo too
Growing on a log
The lyre bird was walking back down the track where I saw it on the way in. It was pretty relaxed about my presence.
Good to get 5 orchids in flower - only 4 photographed as the mosquito orchids were in the last week post. Walk done and back home
We went off to a friend's place to pick a big fridge for free. Dropped my car off for service on the way. Got the fridge loaded. Had a drink there - was nice reflection of respective mother's day events.
Came home to cook dinner - beef rendang made from scratch with the leftover short beef ribs.
Trade action: Bought BASS.PA - French Real Estate
