Anzac Day orchids at the Sphinx Memorial : April 25 2023
Rained again overnight. Woke to a clear Anzac Day. No plans for the day. Got the investing post published. Pottered around a few Internet Marketing things - not much working there. Got 2,000 leads in lists and cannot get 30 clicks.
What I do know works - go bush. On the bike today to walk two tracks. Went to look for bunny orchids first - a hard slow look in a known spot under the powerlines
Spent the time to get photos for ID. Not just the flower
But the leaves too
Eastern bunny orchid - smooth leaf - not hairy
More leaf evidence
Eriochilus cucullatus
Another leaf - they are all consistent - smooth - central red vein - not hairy
These are all flowering on the west side of the works under the powerlines getting the morning sun
There are none on the east side - and the track work to do the power pipes smashed everything in between
Photo from the east to the west - zoom in and you will see the flashes of white. The middle is the mess the electiticy people made
Mushroom action
Banksia season is here
NSW coral heath flower - in white
And tinged in pink
And this is the new road they built. The bush has just recovered from the effort 5 years ago. This orchids grow on the edges. Rode down to Sphinx Memorial to look for greenhoods. Lots of people about
Always get the shudders when I see these signs - they cleared the track a feew weeks back - now they are remaking the trail
Did find one surviving sharp greenhood just up from the trackwork - pterostylis acuminata
Chanced on this insect - some form of lacewing is my guess - it was walking and not flying
Mini mushroom close to one I saw last week growing on a tree trunk
Found one more sharp greenhood budding just off the tracwork
A few pea flowers - colours are special
Keep seeing this milkwort - not got an ID yet
Came across this mushroom farm on the way back. Each is about the size of a teacup saucer
A whole arc on the edge of the track
They will be gone next week as this part of the trail had not been made up yet.
Here is a sample of the track work. They have excavated the trail edge to guide water away from the trail. This was already a solid enough run-off. This spot is the only known location on this trail for caladenia alata. Yep - right on the edges here - gone forever.
More mushroom variety
There were heaps of people around who had come to pay tribute to the Anzacs at the Sphinx Memorial. Normally the place is deserted apart from me and the diamond python
My grandfather served in the British Army in the Great War. I think of him at times like this. Lest We Forget
Got a ride in. Got the steps in. Paid tribute to the Anzacs. Found orchids
Dinner: Coq au vin - brown the chicken and lardons and add to sauteed onion, celery, carrots, garlic.
Pour over cup of red wine and cup of chicken stock and a bouquet garni (rosemary, thyme, oregano) from the garden. Bring to the boil - then bake in oven lid on for 45 minutes at 120C
Add in sliced mushrooms and some flour to thicken and bake lid off another 15 minutes
Serve with mash and your favourite veges - were did Brussels sprouts
Trade action: Bought in Europe - TKA.DE, PNL.AS, PHIA.AS
