Floral Tribute from the bush to my Friend Kathryn : February 17 2023
Was going to be a tough day. One of my cycling buddies lost her battle with cancer. We met in 2015 when she cycled through Sydney. We discovered then we worked together when I was consulting with Xerox in Rochester, NY in the late 1990s. As a cancer sufferer, she was a great support to a few of my friends facing their own cancer battles
RIP Kathryn - ride on. Since she decided to stop all treatments I have been posting a flower or two from my daily walks in the bush.
This came from today's walk in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - she loved the purple flowers
I drove up to the far gate as I needed to buy fuel for the lawnmower. Mission was a long walk looking for midge orchids and to remember my friend - she loved the pink spider grevilleas too
Hyacinth orchids have shut up shop - seed pod formed
Turned into a walk for banksia flowers. Always amazes me how they just push out a bud in the middle of a branch
Same plant but with a view of the track
One side track is becoming overgrown with leptospermum just bursting into summer colour - 3 versions - white
White and pink blended
Then pink. Back to banksia - this one shows the stage ahead as the petals start to fold a way from the column
And then open up fully
Did find the midge orchids- fringed orchid - same plant for 3 shots. The bottom flower is in focus - the pollinator fly on top is not
Next photo in has better focus of more of the flowers and the fly
Last one is the best of the fly - worst part - I had not seen the fly when I took the photos. Orchid is corunastylis fimbriatus- I had seen these plants last week - the photographed one was only budding then
New spot for Rupp's midge orchid.
Corunastylis ruppii.
Next photo is of a twig shape that looked out of place - eagle eyes will do that - find stuff out of place. Photo not quite right but I leave it here to convey the image
It is some form of stink bug - it moved when I got close. It turned for a side on view
Turned back - the extended walk did not provide any orchids
Lamberti formosa on the way back. Formosa is the Latin word for beautiful- thatnis for my fried Kathryn - a beautiful person
Did check on the brittle midge orchids - still 3 plants - one flowering. Hoping there will be more in coming days.
Got the fuel. Local service station does pump service - I asked for 4 litres - she filled the cannister for 22 litres at a crazy $2.09 a litre. I lost it as prices have been 50 cents lower in the week. You just cost me 4 or 5 bottles of wine. The fake is too low octane for my car but some will go there
We are going to my wife's brother for weekend. I am doing some of the meals - prepped the pork belly and pork ribs for sous vide while we are out tonight
Pork belly will be 15 hours at 158F and the ribs 10 hours at the same temperature.
We went out for a friend's 70th. Banquet at a Thai restaurant followed by a Motown tribute show. Show was good. Best part Is lead guitarist and pianist are friends - not seen them in a while
Turned into a huge day. Misplaced my phone on the way out - big panic how to get Actifit post done. Used FindMyPhone - it will call the phone and turn on sound and volume. Had dropped the phone in the car. Crawled into bed at 1:30 am
Trade action: Sold NAT. Bought GDX.
