As many lace monitor lizards as bonnet orchids : February 6 2023

avatar

A new week begins to a steamy day. Had it in my head to explore a different orchid track. That did not happen as I got stuck into writing up the week's investing post. Called for a change up of the day's thought.

Drove down to Bobbin Head to check Warrimoo Track for early signs of autumn orchids. The track works along the water away from the marina into the rainforest

Mushrooms are emerging

Interesting bunch - 3 and hairy

Cicadas were buzzing away - a few husks around

Still a few flannel flowers open

Did find a few bonnet orchids - lots finishing - this one is about to shut up shop

Loved the room with a view of this one - cryptostylis erecta

Was really a day for creek pictures each time the bush was open enough

Duffys Forest on the other side. One day I will plan a walk in from the other side

Disturbed this lace monitor lizard - it stopped and chose not to run up the tree which is what they normally do..

Looking back down the creek

Eastern water skink was happy to pose

A few epacris longifolia opening up. The photo of the openers did not work but the promise one works

Turned back without finding any wasp orchids in the known spots - lots of leaf litter

Watched this flower drop to ground and land the right way up - like nature invented a fidget spinner

This goanna popped into the path in front of me. Kept walking the track as I followed slowly - it was not turning off. A bit hard to pass as steep side on left and water on right.

It chose to stop here. Why? The track narrows through this thick reed stuff and it cannot see a way forward. The path is where the ring is marked. I looked for a way around - too steep and then dropped into the creek. Came back and threw a few branches - it moved

Wattle flowers emerging with a view of the track

Did find orchhid leaves forming in the thick leaf litter - probably nodding greenhoods

Did find a chiloglottis orchid budding. Had missed it on the way out. They grow on the downhill side of the track in the middle thirds of each of the four rises the path follows. The track has been hammered through the wet season last year. Track gets muddy or turns into a stream - walkers walk the edges and wipe out the orchids

Did find two orchids. Did find one budding. Enjoyed the creek views and was sure pleased I did not have to ride the bike back up the hill after a sweaty walk

Weekly investing post has a few thoughts about ASIC semiconductors

Dinner: Fry up for me - eggs and bacon and a few left overs jazzed up

Trade action: Aus - bought SWM.AX, Europe - bought ERA.PA, PNL.AS. US - bought COTY to get pretty.

When I used to live in Brisbane I have seen those monitor lizards on Fraser Island. Always a very cool sighting. Not sure if they make a good pet 🤦‍♂️

I would not want one as a pet. The 2nd one was not far off two metres long
