Rant Time about Track Work on Lovers Jump Creek : January 17 2023
Another steamy and busy day. Finishing off review of new affiliate marketing product from a friend. Getting on top of the back garden mess. Stepping through refinements to ASX investing approach
Did get out to walk the north side of Lovers Jump Creek. Been holding off going with the sewer work being done - too scared to see the mess. What was a walking track one foot wide is now a 3 metre wide fire trail. This first picture shows the total wipe out of a helmet orchid colony on the left. There are maybe 10 plants and this is the only spot on the whole track - gone.
Mission today was to find the first chiloglottis openers for the season - these are above the track. The ones on the track are gone
Chiloglottis seminuda - new for this season
Side on photo shows why the common name is turtle orchid - looks like one
This was the track side home for turtle orchids - gone. They do grow between here and the creek in leech heaven
Tongue orchids have been spared
Back view shows the prominent veins for cryptostylis subulata
There were a few chiloglottis growing here - never seen them flower - gone now
This latest track work has gone even wider than the previous work done in December - two different chiloglottis species wiped out here - I have previously checked above the track and on the low side - this was their spot. The formicifera is only found here on the north side
Came by this frilled lizard - he did not budge for photos. Looks like he lost a bit of his tail
Wild strawberry - not seen these here before - quite far below the houses above
Huge cluster of bonnet orchid leaves under the bushes - there were flower spikes - just a few
Cryptostylis erecta
A bit more side on
Narrow leaf geebung. I will learn more about these over time
Big cluster of bonnet orchids right against the rocks - track work digger could not get that close
Different light with sun behind
Did find a single hyacinth orchid on this side - they were more common but now scarce in the rainforest sections
A little more yellow - hibbertia perhaps
Bonnet orchids intertwined
Doffing its cap
More normal spot for dipodium variegatum in the more open bush
Not all of them make it - some infection took one
One frame - four plants flowering
The culprits - relined sewers need a 3 metre wide access track
Crossed the creek to south side to check another chiloglottis site. Two types here
See if you can tell the difference
The clue lies in how far down the labellum the calli go
The seminuda one stops about midway. Chiloglottis sylvestris goes further
The walk was hard on the mind seeing the destruction. We will only know over 2 or 3 seasons what's irrevocably lost. But I did find orchids in the expected places.
Dinner: Cottage pie from leftover bolognese sauce.
Trade action: Europe. Bought AKZA.AS, ATO.PA, TKA.DE, RNW.L. US: Bought SUN, SBLK. Used stock screens to find breakouts
