Blotched Hyacinth Orchids in a new spot : January 3 2023
Was going to be a quiet day. My wife has developed a bad cold. Step one - ride down to pharmacy to get some medicine to smack it on the head. Focused my day in on getting a new affiliate marketing program moving ahead - watch the training
Went on the bike to walk a small loop of Seven Mile Beach NP not walked thus far. This variegated hyacinth orchid not far from one I found last time - been attacked by something to give it the droops
Found this blotched hyacinth orchid on a side track back to the sewerage works access road
Side on - notice the detail on the flower stalk - no spots
Close by was another plant - not as tall
Dipodium punctatum
Black eyed susan shows we are not far from the houses
The slow walk always finds stuff to see - a vine, lichen and moss
Great spike on this hyacinth orchid burst forth since last week
Side on of dipodium variegatum - note the spots on the flower stalk
Directly behind - say 5 metres away - was this orchid - a little more pink with blotches a little more even. I have learned that colour is not a good differentiator
No spots on the flower stalk - dipodium punctatum. Not roseum as no stripes on the labellum
You decide
This photo shows the value of looking closely - orchid in front is variegatum and one behind is punctatum
Hard to tell what this is - maybe a hyacinth orchid
Base of the spike is consistent
Lots of butterflies - took a while to get this one still and open wings.
Some contortions on this hyacinth orchid as a spider web pulls it one way
Looking up into the eucalyptus - ant nests up high
Native bluebell - does not look like a bell but it is blue
Back to the trail I normally walk in on - know there are orchids here - been less than a year and the palms are coming back
The two spots I saw with buds last week now have flowers - a big one
Dipodium variegatum in amongst the palms
This photo intrigued me - looks like single seed pod dispersed seeds in a tight zone and they all sprouted
This dipodium variegatum is appreciably smaller than its mate just 20 metres away
Got the orchids in a new small slice of bush. Got some open from buds seen a week ago - keep coming back
Cycling recording only got the trip to chemist - no map today
My wife stayed low all day. Tough as I had hoped to see my son but do not want to take germs near the baby.
Dinner was a tow stage thing - cooked duck breasts but not happy they were safe. BBQ steak instead was fine - for me only. Wife too sick to eat
