Hyacinth Orchids in Seven Mile Beach NP : December 23 2022
On top of planning for the Christmas weekend. A few things to get from shops which I could do by bicycle. Did not work out that way when our neighbour pointed out we had a flat tyre. My wife called a tyre place down the road - closing for the holidays at 1 pm. We can make that.
Drove down there in a gap in her meeting schedule. Found this tree in the garden - flowers look like birds and the birds love the tree
Close up. No idea what the tree is
Tyre place did a good job. Culprit was a roofing screw most likely picked up when we drove past a building site in the estate. Cheap to fix.
Next door is Manildra starch plant - the smell and chemicals are giving me a head ache.
Did the shopping - a few treats.
Went for a ride to walk a slice of Seven Mile Beach NP after lunch
Some grand eucalyptus trees.
Surprised an echidna. It burrowed into the sand to disguise like a banksia seed pod on the ground
Found a hyacinth orchid bud. The main spike has lost its top - plant is pushing up another one
Not much further along saw a variegated hyacinth orchid - photos were bad but behind was this hyacinth orchid. Looks like dipodium punctatum - stripes on labellum are not distinctive
Stepped back view
Blotched hyacinth orchid
Nice cluster of dipodium variegatum - seven plants in frame
Not a lot of other flowers open - had to photograph one
Christmas balls
Close up study shows there is a tree growing out of the knot hole of the big tree
A bit short of flowers - took pictures of grass seed heads to make up
Variegated hyacinth orchid on the way back - dipodium variegatum
Looks the same as the other pink hyacinth orchid - dipodium punctatum
Stepped back view
Kookaburra up high
This was a challenging photo. The spider is about the size of a thumb nail and was spinning a web - on the move. This is as still as I could get
Turned into a dipodium day
Was good to get out and ride a bit
When I got home we had visitors. I had planned ahead a little and cooked bolognese sauce before I went out. We had a good chin wag and a few drinks. All I had to do was cook pasta and drinks turned into dinner.
Price for the day - two ticks - one in the house and one on me. Turned into a nasty infection overnight
Wishing all my readers a Happy Christmas - rock it in a hive way
