3 Orchid Day on Bombaderry Creek Tracks : December 18 2022
Decided to have a decompress day after the big move. Slow start and then head out to explore the new home area a little more. Decided to check out the south side of Bombaderry Creek - walked the other side months ago
As it is new territory, photos will overlap a bit
Purple fan flower
Hibbertia I think
Banksia serratum - leaf shows serrations for the name
Blue sky was on and off
Fringe lily
Kunzea
I always expect to find orchids - took a while and spied these tall spikes - horned orchid
Orthoceras strictum
Side on shows the labellum well
Before and after photo - focus is on the after
Eriestemon flower - just a few left
Not sure what this is - grevillea of some sort. My name for it is pink loofah flower
Found one tongue orchid - crypyostylis subulata
Reached the ledge above the creek - aim is to track up and around to get below to look for rock orchids
Portrait photo from same rock ledge
Third orchid for the day was on the edge of the path going down - dipodium variegatum. Close up photos were out of focus
Did find evidence of rock orchids on the rocks above my head. Close up photos did not work - no flowers
I have walked this part of the creek before after heavy rain
Creek crossing below the old weir looks a little more comfortable this time. I had some big jumps to make last time
Walked east along the creek for a while and then tracked back up to the south side - pea flower shows I got well away from the rain forest section
Cross section shows how deep this creek has carved - say 70 metres
Context photo - that sign tells me I can get to the creek with a shorter walk than the one just done
On the board walk section there were these flowers growing - bladderwort
Flower is unique as it has two distinct parts - the view from below. Never could get a normal camera photo like that as plant is only 3 inches tall. Phone is easy. Other interesting thing is the plant is carnivorous
Yellow pea flower to close off the flower show. Was a good walk in new area and three orchids found flowering.
Did the long loop driving back to Shoalhaven Heads up Cambewarra Mountain and through Wattamolla and up Woodhill Mountain to Berry. I have cycled those roads but wanted to explore orchid walking points. Nothing really - very steep and farmland mostly
Back home - disposed of cardboard boxes from my son's place. Nice quiet evening. Dinner was a blokes dinner: BBQ sausages, eggs and bacon and a little salad.
The day was a good decompress day after the emotion of the move with my son and his new family.
