Out and About - Orchid Surprise : December 11 2022

Sunday breaks to a clear blue sky day. We are heading south to visit a friend. A few photos form home to start as I did a few garden chores

Small cicada on the pest free cage - cage works

First of the cosmos flowers open in the front - purple is my favourite

Second up was the pink - all grown from naturally dispersed seed from the first plants grown from seed

Off we went. Stop at the Dutch Shop on the way - part of my wife's heritage - brodje kroketten. A long road to our friend's place - saw these orchids as we whizzed by at 80 km/h. Had to stop for photos

Rose hyacinth orchids - counted 13 plants in this spot - second spot along the road

Stopped at out friend's place - their property is right in the bush with a fair collection of native plants

Banksia serratum going a bit better than we see our side of town

Stages of growth. Flower fills out from the bottom and progressively opens up, up the spike - early days.

Did walk the perimeter to look for orchids - this is not one - Australian bluebell - not Australian at all.

As we sat and chatted I noticed strawberries in one hanging basket and succulents in the next and a flower spike

Yvonne thinks it is an onion weed. It is an onion orchid - she got the soil for the pot from the ground

Microtis parviflora is an orchid - let the plant go to seed. Snip off the spike and spread it on the edges of the lawn where the mower cannot go. Good chance the plant in the hanging basket will bud again next season.

We had a good chin wag. Was a huge driving day. My wife picked up the lovely pot Yvonne had made and we found orchids in an unlikely place. I got steps in which we got home raking the front lawn. Big trees next door are losing a lot of bark as the summer heat grows

Dinner: Duck curry from left over duck. Had no red curry paste and made a hash of green curry paste and tikka masala. Sweet came form a cheek of mango - yum.

Brings to an end a different weekend mostly spent away from home. Good practice as we have a few weekends away coming up - the next 5
