Day 15 - Mollymook to Shoalhaven Heads It's a Wrap : October 29 2022
Am not often up and moving at sunrise. The people in the motel room above me were moving around about the time the sun came up. I got up. Got the photo of the sunrise
Left a little after 7:30 under a clear sky with wind blowing from behind. Two biggish hills to clear and then a long steady run down to Nowra on the Shoalhaven River
The village of Milton getting ready for Saturday morning - St Paul and St Peter Church
Milton streetscape. Big drop from Milton to the valley - then the first of the day's climbs
Not sure which is the best photo format - landscape
vs portrait
Nice to see distance markers under 100 kms - get to Nowra and add 12 kms
Next big hill up Conjola Mountain
View across to Southern Highlands from the top of Conjola Mountain - one of two impressive bits of road architecture along this route
Passed the turn off to Sussex Inlet. We have a good Bike Friday friend who lives down there
Next turn off will become a frequently visited turn. My son has bought a house at Sanctuary Point - not settled yet but not far off.
My thoughts for the day so far. Traffic was super busy which is not what I expected on a Saturday. We did lose a few each turnoff to Jervis Bay. I was in struggle street with motivation. The noise was getting to me.
Had a nasty close encounter going up one of the hills. There was a huge amount of glass on the shoulder. I could not steer around and tried to uncleat to get off to stop. Was looking like I was going to fall - never good. No idea which foot came out but I managed to get feet on the ground - copped a pedal on the shins - ouch.
Service station at Wandandian, 20 kms from Nowra was a good stop - got a drink and a bag of crisps. Sat on the ground for a bit. The road out was narrow for a while. Stopped at Bewong rest area to gather my spirits. Time to plug away to get to Nowra
Stopped at Nowra Fresh to get fresh fruit and milk and fish and chips for lunch
Found a park above the showgrounds to eat my fish and chips under the Navy helicopter. Nowra is home to HMAS Albatross training base - Fleet Air Arm helicopters - note the direction of the wind
Turn right for Shoalhaven Heads with that wind up my back
Up ahead is Coolangatta Mountain - the sign of home. I look out at it from my study. The 12 kms were knocked off in under 30 minutes
Broughton Creek with Southern Highlands behind
And the join with the Shoalhaven River - note the wind effect on the river
Last turn on a 1250 kms odyssey for Kids Cancer
Dropped the trailer and pannier bag off at home, put a dry shirt on and had a celebratory beer at the pub
View of the river out to sea. The river mouth is open = good news as there is a lot of water coming down.
Turned into a quite quick day - downhill and flat for the last 30 kms at least
My challenge for Kids Cancer is complete. I set out to do 1250 kms and raise $2500. I set out to complete the bit of Melbourne to Sydney not done - from Melbourne to Bermagui sealed that. I have now cycled the entire coast from Broome in WA to Rockhampton in QLD
This was a tough tour.
A story. My wife went to a work reunion event yesterday. One of her colleagues lives in Pambula. Your husband rides a blue bike with small wheels and a red trailer. We saw him in Pambula. They will have passed me on their way to Sydney for the event
