Há ainda muitos que acreditam que a noção de eu e a consciência em geral está no corpo, mais precisamente no cérebro, e seria um fenômeno cerebral, reduzindo assim a alma a um processo químico-físico estritamente material.

No entanto esta concepção não tem nenhuma base cientifica, e não pode ser respaldada pela experiência empírica, já que há uma enorme quantidade de observações que desmentem taxativamente que o cérebro humano seja responsável pela consciência.
