Mam jeszcze kilka dni wolnego, chcieliśmy je wykorzystać na krótkie jednodniowe wycieczki. Pierwszym wyborem był Luksemburg, który planowaliśmy odwiedzić podczas Niemieckiego tripa wzdłuż Mozeli. Wczoraj rano miała przyjechać pielęgniarka, żeby zrobić żonie zastrzyk, zaraz po tym mieliśmy ruszyć do Luksemburga. Niestety pielęgniarka się spóźniła, więc musieliśmy zmienić kierunek, na bliższe miejsce. Od jakiegoś czasu chodził mi po głowie pomysł wycieczki do Leuven, idealny kierunek na jednodniową wyprawę.

[ENG] I still have a few days off and we wanted to use them for short day trips. Our first choice was Luxembourg, which we planned to visit on a German trip along the Moselle. Yesterday morning, a nurse was supposed to arrive to give my wife an injection, we were supposed to set off for Luxembourg immediately afterwards. Unfortunately the nurse was late, so we had to change direction, to a closer place. The idea of a trip to Leuven had been on my mind for some time, the perfect destination for a day trip.

Przez zupełny przypadek zaczęliśmy od Kruidtuin, czyli najstarszego w Belgii i jednego z najstarszych w Europie ogrodu botanicznego. Uniwersytet w Leuven stworzył ten ogród na potrzeby swoich studentów medycyny w 1738 roku. Ogród szczyci się kolekcją ponad 8000 gatunków roślin z całego świata, w tym rzadkimi i zagrożonymi gatunkami. Ogród botaniczny znajduje się w samym sercu miasta, w otoczeniu historycznych budynków i malowniczych uliczek. Entuzjaści botaniki mogą cieszyć się różnorodnymi kolekcjami roślin. Różnorodność gatunków gwarantuje wielokolorowość przez długie miesiące. Pikniku tam nie zrobimy, ale można odpocząć na jednej z kilkudziesięciu ławeczek.

[ENG] By complete coincidence, we started at Kruidtuin, which is the oldest botanical garden in Belgium and one of the oldest in Europe. The University of Leuven created this garden for its medical students in 1738. The garden boasts a collection of more than 8,000 plant species from around the world, including rare and endangered species. The botanical garden is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by historic buildings and picturesque streets. Botany enthusiasts can enjoy the diverse collections of plants. The variety of species guarantees multicolour for months to come. You won't be able to have a picnic there, but you can relax on one of the dozens of benches.

Jedynym miejsce, które zapamiętałem z poprzedniej wizyty w Leuven był Oude Markt. Gwarny plac otoczony ozdobnymi kamienicami z dwuspadowym dachem, pełny barów i restauracji z ogródkami. Kiedy tam byliśmy pierwszy raz, był to któryś z zimowych miesięcy, wtedy plac był pusty. Wczoraj natomiast tętnił życiem.

[ENG] The one place I remembered from my previous visit to Leuven was the Oude Markt. A bustling square surrounded by ornate gabled townhouses, full of bars and restaurants with gardens. The first time we were there, it was one of the winter months, then the square was empty. Yesterday, on the other hand, it was bustling with life.

Jedną z najbardziej spektakularnych budowli jest Historisch Stadhuis van Leuven, czyli historyczny ratusz zbudowany w XV wieku w stylu gotyckim z iglicami i 236 rzeźbami na murach. Inspiracją dla budowniczych tego ratusza był ratusz w Brugii, jednak tamten nie jest tak bogato zdobiony.

[ENG] One of the most spectacular buildings is the Historisch Stadhuis van Leuven, a historic town hall built in the 15th century in Gothic style with spires and 236 sculptures on the walls. The builders of this town hall were inspired by the town hall in Bruges, but that one is not so richly decorated.

Sint-Pieterskerk to wspaniały kościół kolegiacki w Leuven, zbudowany w stylu brabanckiej gotyku, jest uważany za jeden z najpiękniejszych kościołów w Europie. Pierwszy kościół na miejscu Sint-Pieterskerk został zbudowany w X wieku, ale strawił go pożar w 1176 roku. Budowa kościoła w obecnej formie rozpoczęła się w 1425 roku, a zakończyła się w 1520 roku. W zasadzie to prace zakończyły się w tym roku, bo budowla nie została ukończona, brakuje jej wieży, z której zrezygnowano z powodu braku funduszy. Projekt wieży można podziwiać wewnątrz kościoła. Budowla jest imponująca.

[ENG] The Sint-Pieterskerk is a magnificent collegiate church in Leuven, built in the Brabant Gothic style, and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Europe. The first church on the site of Sint-Pieterskerk was built in the 10th century, but was consumed by fire in 1176. Construction of the church in its present form began in 1425 and was completed in 1520. In fact, the work ended that year, as the building was not completed, missing its tower, which was abandoned due to lack of funds. The design of the tower can be admired inside the church. The building is impressive.

Blisko ratusza i kościoła pełno jest historycznych kamieniczek, doskonale odrestaurowanych i utrzymanych.

[ENG] Near the city hall and church are full of historic townhouses, perfectly restored and maintained.

Bardzo charakterystyczna rzeźba - fontana Fons Sapientiae "Fonske" nawiązuje do akademickiego charakteru miasta. Przedstawia studenta, który wlewa sobie piwo do otwartej czaszki, a w drugiej ręce trzyma książkę. W bardziej oficjalnej wersji wlewa on sobie wiedzę ze źródła wiedzy.

[ENG] A very characteristic sculpture, the Fons Sapientiae "Fonske" fountain, refers to the academic character of the city. It depicts a student pouring beer into his open skull while holding a book in his other hand. In a more official version, he pours himself knowledge from a source of knowledge.
