Wybrałem się wczoraj na spacer do Jemappes, zachodniej dzielnicy Mons, niegdyś samodzielnego miasta, ale w 1977 roku włączone w granice miasta Mons. Spacerując po tym postprzemysłowym miasteczku, trudno uwierzyć, że jego początki sięgają 2000 lat przed naszą erą. Z tego okresu pochodzą ślady odkryte przez archeologów, w tych okolicach znajdowały się kamieniołomy krzemienia. Kilkaset lat później plemię Nerwianów z „Gamapium” zostało podbite przez Cesarstwo Rzymskie.

[ENG] Yesterday I went for a walk to Jemappes, the western district of Mons, once an independent city, but in 1977 incorporated into the city limits of Mons. Walking around this post-industrial town, it is difficult to believe that its origins date back to 2000 BC. Traces discovered by archaeologists date back to this period; there were flint quarries in this area. Several hundred years later, the Nervian tribe of "Gamapium" was conquered by the Roman Empire.

Pod koniec XII wieku rozpoczęto eksploatację węgla pod miastem i pojawiły się pierwsze koncesje na prawa do wydobycia węgla, archiwalne dokumenty zaświadczają o „dołach śmierci” znajdujących się we władaniu hrabiego Hainaut, który pobierał opłaty licencyjne. [ENG] At the end of the 12th century, coal mining began under the city and the first concessions for coal mining rights appeared, archival documents testify to the "death pits" owned by the Count of Hainaut, who collected licence fees. In the second half of the 19th century, a company of rolling mills, forges and foundries was established in Jemappes, which would change the character of the city for over a hundred years. In 1961, the last of the hard coal mines was closed, and in 1977, due to the crisis of the steel industry, the last of this type of plant in Jemappes was closed. Since then, the city, like many in the region, has not had much to offer in terms of jobs. This is clearly visible when walking around the town.

Na placu przy dawnym ratuszu miejskim z 1876 roku znajduje się ciekawy budynek. Na parterze tego narożnego budynku znajduje się bar Le Belvédère, fasada budynku i ta wieża na dachu jest bardzo charakterystyczna i przyciąga uwagę.

[ENG] There is an interesting building on the square next to the former town hall from 1876. On the ground floor of this corner building there is the bar Le Belvédère, the facade of the building and this tower on the roof are very characteristic and attract attention.

"Giganci z Jemappes", mural powstał w 2022 roku, namalowała go austriacka artystka Isa Frau, dzieło ma podkreślać lokalne dziedzictwo i tradycje Mons.
