Kilka dni temu okazało się, że będę miał wolną niedzielę. W związku z tym zaproponowałem wyjazd nad morze. Do ostatniej chwili warzyło się czy pojedziemy, prognoza pogody nie była zachęcająca na niedzielę. Planowałem wypad na Côte d'Opale, ale tam miało przez cały dzień padać, natomiast na belgijskim wybrzeżu od południa miało być pogodnie. Padła więc decyzja jedziemy do Ostendy.

[ENG] A few days ago it turned out that I would have Sunday off. Consequently, I proposed a trip to the seaside. Until the last minute it was brewing whether we would go, the weather forecast was not encouraging for Sunday. I had planned a trip to the Côte d'Opale, but it was supposed to rain all day there, while on the Belgian coast, it was supposed to be clear from midday. So the decision was made to go to Ostend.

To już druga podróż w ostatnich miesiącach do najpiękniejszego nadmorskiego miasta w Belgii (konkurencja jest nieduża). Tym razem inaczej spojrzałem na te miasto, głównie za sprawą lektury "Ducha króla Leopolda" Adama Hochschilda. Ostenda była ulubionym nadmorskim kurortem belgijskich władców, niesławny król Leopold II inwestował zyski z niewolniczej pracy w rozbudowę miasta. Do dziś przy promenadzie nadmorskiej stoi jego pomnik pośród wdzięcznego kongijskiego ludu. Pod koniec XX wieku aktywiści odpiłowali jednej z figur rękę, co miało ich zdaniem nadać realizmu temu pomnikowi.

[ENG] This is the second trip in recent months to the most beautiful coastal city in Belgium (there is not much competition). This time I got a different perspective on the city, mainly due to reading Adam Hochschild's The Ghost of King Leopold. Ostend was a favourite seaside resort of Belgian rulers, the infamous King Leopold II invested the profits from slave labour in the expansion of the town. To this day, a statue of him stands on the seafront promenade amidst the grateful Congolese people. At the end of the 20th century, activists sawed off one of the statues' arms, which they thought would give realism to the statue.
