Falling "In" to Fallout 4 Again

I don't know what it is, but a couple of days ago I caught a bug and I decided to install Fallout 4 on my computer again. It's been years since I bought it. Despite my preview comment, I don't really consider Fallout 4 to be a retro game. As a middle aged man, I prefer to consider the classics from the Commodore, Atari, Nintendo, and MS DOS days to be retro gaming.

There are likely many who would contend that Fallout 4 fits that bill. I mean, it has been almost ten years since it came out on November 10th, 2015. The funny thing is, I didn't but it until it was likely five years old.

I usually wait for Steam to have one of their sales because as much as I would love to play new games like Diablo 4, I just can't justify spending the $80 they want for them. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a lot of time and effort goes into making a game. I don't argue that the programers and developers should get paid a fair wage, but $80 is just a punch in the gut.

It's more likely I spent something like $5 or $10 on the game when it was on sale for the holidays. I'm pretty sure I bought it around the same time I bought Witcher III, but at the time I found that game more interesting, so I didn't bother too much with Fallout 4.

I remember playing Fallout 3, it was a really good game. It had a lot of different aspects to it and I found it pretty enjoyable to play. I think the ability to mod it is what really turned me on. Some of the communities out there have made some pretty fantastic add ons for the game. So much so that in future versions they added them as part of the game.

For example, if you have never been to the starship in Fallout 3, you are totally missing out.

I tried to get into Fallout New Vegas, but it just didn't have the same appeal for me that Fallout 3 did. Either that or I just got busy doing other things. I honestly don't remember.

When I finally did get around to playing Fallout 4, I didn't end up getting very far. In fact, I don't think I was even able to get out of the house at the beginning of the game. I eventually gave up and moved on to something else.

To be fair, I don't usually play games with the sound on, so that makes following the dialog kind of hard. In games that have a lot of dialog, you can see how it would be easy to miss cues and other prompts that are important.

I initially started playing again on my laptop computer. It has a i7 processor and a GeForce 2060 RTX graphics card. I know, not the latest and the greatest, but it was doing the job. @iikrypticsii happened to be walking by and noticed that it seemed jittery. I hadn't noticed it, but he commented that the frame rate was horrible.

I decided maybe I should move the game over to my desktop that also has an i7 processor, but is running GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. The difference was pretty noticeable right away. I have to admit, I am quite impressed with how it looks on this machine.

I have the settings cranked to maximum and I am running it in windowed mode so I can quickly close it if anyone comes in my office!

I've gotta be honest though, despite the improved frame rate, I frequently find myself getting a little motion sick playing the game. That never used to happen to me when I was younger. I am guessing my older body just can't handle the movement of a first person shooter like I used to. Long gone are my days of running around in HalfLife and Unreal Tournament for hours on end like it was second nature.

I'm only about five hours into the game so far and I find myself taking breaks pretty frequently. As you can see, I clearly made it past the introduction of the game finally and I am working on finishing some quests.

The new crafting piece of the game is quite interesting, but I have found myself jumping over to Google quite a bit trying to figure out how it all works. I've got five beds sitting in the middle of my workspace area (from the first quest), and I am not sure how to move them out of the way.

I can see how as the game progresses the things I can do and make are going to be much more complex. Right now I would just settle for having a decent weapon. These pipe guns are pretty lame and I don't feel like lugging around in the power armor all the time. At least not until I have the resources to keep it up and running.

I'm working toward the "Infiltrator" build that seems to be quite popular online. Again, I have been leaning heavy on Google for the information I need to do that. Some seem to think that Infiltrator is way overpowered, but quite honestly, easy mode is sort of my jam. I've never been the best gamer, so anything to make things smoother for me without flipping into god mode is a okay in my book.

I clearly have a long way to go in this game. It's likely it will take me quite some time to finish as I only play in spurts here and there. I was able to clear out USAF Radar Station Olivia at what I feel was a relatively low level (4 or 5).

There is a good chance I will do some more posts about Fallout 4 in the future, but for now, I am just going to get back to enjoying the game.

Have you played this game? What did you think of it? Is it one of the best in the franchise?

I have never been a gamer. I played Atari and Nintendo when a kid and teenager, but never much as an adult. I did have a time when I played Splinter Cell on PLay Station with my oldest son when he was younger. However, I just can't play these games today with all the requirements for pushing different buttons and using different joysticks at once. It is like you need to play Twister with your fingers or something.

I have never been good at the newer console games. Especially first person shooters. I need a keyboard and a mouse. Give me that and I can strafe with the best of them.

Heck, I can barely type, let alone play a game on a keyboard and use a mouse at the same time. I remember the old Wolfenstein and Doom computer games I used to play at work one time, they were somewhat simple, but things have changed a great deal since then.

Fallout 4 was the first game in the series that I played way back when it was released on my PS4 and I have very fond memories of it really enjoying the world. I did finish the story and spent quite some hours in it. I have no plans to go back, it was great for what it was!

That's cool. I look forward to exploring more of it. So far I don't feel like it is too different from Fallout 3 besides some gameplay items. We will see though.

I'm pretty decent at candy crush when I take the time to sit down with it!

The Power Armour put me off Fallout 4. All that switching in and out, I wish the PA didn't exist. It was great until that appeared.

It took me a bit to get used to it. Now it just sits in my town until I feel like I actually need it.
