Will this be the year for MSU?

It's a bit hard to believe we are just a few short months away from the start of the college basketball season. Heck, pretty soon we are going to be spending our Saturday's on the couch watching college football. Right after that we will have our Sunday's monopolized by the NFL.

Lately this is pretty much how it goes... I get really excited for Michigan State football, they start off decent, but eventually the team breaks down and things don't look so good for them. About that time it is getting close to basketball season, so I have a good excuse to be distracted from just how horrible they are.

This year my hope is that things will be different. With some new faces in the coaching position and quite a few new players on the roster due to those coaching changes, I am trying to be positive about this season.

I'm a realist though, I have little doubt that other team from Michigan and that team from Ohio will probably continue to dominate. They have some good seasons behind them and because of that their recruiting classes are going to be strong for the foreseeable future.

I'm just hoping for a winning record this season. Maybe a little better than a winning record and a decent bowl berth. I'm not expecting a national championship or anything.

On the basketball side of things, I am not even sure what to expect. The news dropped yesterday that one of the top recruits in the country doesn't even have Michigan State in his top ten list. That's a bit embarrassing. Even when we knew players were probably going to go to Duke or Kentucky, they at least had MSU as one of their picks. It might have been a long shot, but we at least made the list.

I've said this before, but Tom Izzo has to be a little worried about his career and legacy at this point. I have zero doubt he is a great coach, but things just haven't felt cohesive over the past five years or so. Things that should be connecting are not and I am not sure why.

There is little doubt Tom has to be reasonably close to retiring at some point. I just don't want him to have to go out on a bad note. Again, I'm not expecting a national championship (though it would be more likely than a football one), I just want him to put together a great team that has a great season with a deep run in the national tournament.

It's going to be impossible to replace him when he does decide to go. There will likely be a lot of years of pain when that happens. I just hope he can put together a decent team this year. Right now, it's looking a bit iffy.
