What's your Fantasy?

It's hard to believe that we are just a few short weeks away from the beginning of football season. I've been a bit distracted with real life stuff and the Olympic games that I haven't really put a lot of thought into it. I need to start looking at my family fantasy league though and see what is going to happen with that.

I have a feeling everyone is still interested in playing this year, but I need to decide if I want to keep the rules the same as I did last year. I also need to decide when to do the draft if we are going to move forward with it. I need to kind of be sneaky about it because if you remember a couple of years ago my oldest niece gamed the system and was able to stack her a pretty nice team that took her far into the post season.

Last year I caught a bit of attitude from her because I did a surprise draft that basically just happened on the fly and nobody knew about it ahead of time. That's my plan again this year, but given how things went down last year, people might be expecting that again this year.

Meanwhile, aside from my duties as the commissioner of the league, I need to start thinking about my own team and how that is going to look for the season. We use Yahoo Fantasy sports for our league and it has the option to rank players ahead of the draft according to your personal preferences.

For example, typically the draft will just take the players in the order they are ranked. The number 1 pick gets the number 1 ranked player and so on. Since there are something like 12 teams in our league, that means the #13 pick rolls back to the team with the first draft pick and then it cycles back through the list.

The problem with that is the top is usually pretty heavy with running backs or wide receivers. Say you want a particular quarterback and you get the 4th pick, but he is listed in the 9th slot. By default that player would go to the person with the #9 pick, and since you have the #4 pick that isn't you. By using the pre-draft rankings, it ensures you get that #9 player with your #4 pick. Then the person with the #5 pick would get the #4 player and so on.

Does that make sense?

You can also add players to your do not draft list. For example, if he were still playing, Aaron Rodgers would be on my do not draft list. I'd probably throw a few other inconsistent quarterbacks on there as well. Mahomes is a perfect example. He can have some stellar games and then he can have games with almost zero points. I'd rather have a mid level quarterback that always averages 20 points per game quite honestly.

I've still got some time to do some research, but I am hoping this is the year that I can put together a really great team that might finally give me the championship that has eluded the @bozz household since we started this league close to a decade ago.

Damn, you are quite heavily into that. I do a fantasy hockey team now and again. Some years I really enjoy it and others it seems to be a burden and take too much time for what it is. I didn't do one last year so maybe I'll check it out this coming season. I use yahoo fantasy too :D

I can't imagine hockey. I did baseball one year and it was literally a full time job because of how many games there are. Football is nice, you check it once or twice a week and you are good, baseball you have to go in every single day and move stuff around. I think I actually ended up winning that year though!
