Tigers Get Swept
After dropping their home opener to Boston on Thursday, the Detroit Tigers went on to lose the next two games giving the Red Sox's a full sweep of the home opener series. I honestly don't know if that just speaks to how good the Sox are or how bad the Tigers are. Hopefully it isn't an indication of how the season is going to go.
Detroit knows all too well the pain of losing over and over again. Just look at the Lions over the past couple of decades. Take a look at the Pistons. Better yet, remember that slump the Tigers were in after their World Series win in 84?
It wasn't until the early 2000's that they finally started to put things back together. Sure, they only made it to that one World Series and they lost, but it was still a really great run for them. I'd love to see that excitement come back.
I'm not sure the fans can take another multi-decade slump like we had before. The 90's were rough, no doubt about it.
I covered the score from Thursday last week.
Today, let's take a look at the Saturday and Sunday games.
14 to 5 on Saturday. That's rough.
Wentz isn't off to a great start this year with a 0 - 2 record and an ERA of 10.29. I can't say that is anything to be super proud of.
What I do see by looking at the box score is the fact that most of the runs scored happened early in the game. The Red Sox had a six run second inning. You take that away and we actually have a bit more of a ballgame.
In fact, you might even be able to chalk this one up to opening day jitters.
It doesn't look like the reliever did much better though. The bull pen gave up six more runs across the last three innings of the game.
Trust me when I say, Tigers fans know about having a bad bullpen. We went for years with an amazing lineup, clutch starting pitchers, and a horrible bullpen. You would have thought they had sorted that out over the years, but maybe that isn't the case.
Sunday on the other hand was a much different story even though it still resulted in a loss by the Tigers. The Sox bested them 4 to 1. The only run the Tigers got was in the first inning. I can imagine that had the crowd a little excited and maybe even hopeful until Boston tied it up in the second.
From there it was another run in the 5th, 7th, and 9th for the Red Sox to clinch the win and the sweep of the home opening series for the Tigers.
Although Boyd got the loss for the Tigers, it is nice to see him still toeing the rubber for the Tigers. He had some real struggle years there for a while and it would be nice to see him become one of the aces for the Tigers.
The Tigers have today off then they are back in action against a Blue Jays team that is 6 and 4 on the season. At 2 - 7 for the Tigers, they are going to have their work cut out for them. The good news is, it is a short trip to Toronto, so hopefully they should be well rested!
