The Enhanced Games

The other day I was at one of the local schools watching my niece play volleyball and I got talking to my brother in law. I asked him if he was going to watch the Olympic games this year and he said he would probably have it on from time to time. I've actually found myself watching a lot more than I thought I would even though they haven't officially started yet!

As we were talking, he asked me if I had heard about the other Olympic games they were going to have. I told him no and he went on to explain about some other games where athletes would be allowed and even encouraged to use performance enhancing drugs. He also stated that he thought they were going to get monetary rewards for beating world records.

I was immediately intrigued because I knew it would make for a great post here on HIVE, so I did a little research and this is what I found...

The Enhanced Games are the brainchild of some guy from Australia who has grown disillusioned with the International Olympic Committee and one of the other committees called the World Anti Doping Organization or something like that.

From what I read, they are only going to allow substances that have been approved by the FDA, but if you know how lax the FDA seems to be in the US, that isn't really saying anything. It does sound like they plan on focusing on safe use of PEDs and seeing just how far humans can exert themselves.

Obviously, there has been a lot of uproar about this and I am honestly not sure which side of the fence I sit on yet. I actually encourage you to visit the site I linked above and read more about it if you are at all interested. Even if you think it is the worst idea ever conceived, it's still a good idea to at least be educated about it.

I have little doubt there is going to be a lot of misinformation surrounding this. It's controversial enough that I would be shocked if there wasn't.

It certainly seems like targeted oversight of some of these substances makes more sense than people using them under the table. Often in unsafe conditions and in ways that they may have not been intended.

It's definitely a bit of a pandora's box, but as I said, I find the idea pretty intriguing. What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
