Power Outage = No Sports

This was the view that @mrsbozz and I had for the better part of Saturday evening. Thankfully, we had plans for the day, so when our power went out at 12:30 PM due to a wind storm, we didn't think much of it. It was a relatively warm day for the middle of December, so the fact that our heat wouldn't run didn't bother us too much either.

The hope was that by the time we came home from our errands around 4 or 5 PM, things would be back to normal. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. It wasn't until around 8:30 or 9:00 PM that things finally kicked back on for us. Thankfully, we have a generator, so keeping our fridge running was not a big deal.

I'm actually a bit surprised the photo above looks so bright. The light used in that was only from candles and LED vanity lights that were strung up on one of our shelves. Oh, plus night mode from my new Pixel 8 phone.

As I mentioned last week, there were no top 25 college basketball games played on Friday night. That didn't stop us from watching basketball though. My nieces high school team had their game streamed and I was able to watch them play.

The team lost, but she did a really great job. She hit a three point shot, had another assist for a three point shot and then she stole the ball and laid it in. Given the short amount of time she played, she still managed to score at least 5 points.

My nephews had some games this weekend as well. I didn't get to watch them, but @mrsbozz's parents went down and said they played really well.

In addition to that, the ESports team at the school district where I worked managed to come home in second place in the Mario Kart championship. They faced a really good team that came in first place. It's pretty impressive given this is only their second season competing!

On Saturday there were about 18 games played and hopefully you didn't follow my advice from last week, because many of them didn't turn out the way I had hoped.

#17 Tennessee took care of #20 Illinois and #4 Purdue handled Alabama as well. #1 Arizona thumped on #23 Wisconsin 98 to 73, and #19 Oklahoma beat Arkansas 79 to 70.

I also told you to keep an eye on that Missouri/#2 Kansas game, well, Kansas had no trouble taking down Missouri.

The two games I was right about were Utah handing #14 BYU their first loss 73 to 69, and Washington upsetting #7 Gonzaga 78 to 73. I won a little bit of money on both those games, but not enough to make back what I bet in the first place.

Finally, on Sunday, there were only two games in the top 25. They were both upsets and I should have put money down on both of them. I had actually planned to, but then I got busy and I just forgot. That's what I get I guess.

Colorado beat #15 Miami in spectacular fashion 90 to 63, and Memphis beat #21 Texas A&M 81 to 75.

I was busy watching the Lions play like the same old Lions on Sunday, and then watching Nebraska take Michigan State to town in basketball. It was pretty horrible.

It's hard to believe that a team who was ranked in the top five at the beginning of the season could be falling so short. I will be interested to see what Tom Izzo has to say about the latest loss, because quite honestly, I feel like he has a lot of explaining to do.

I feel like the Michigan State teams over the past five years have had a ton of talent, but they have lacked the ability to play as a cohesive unit. That's on the coach in my opinion. I actually got into a discussion with my brother in law at Thanksgiving about whether or not it is time for Izzo to step down. He seemed to think I was a bit crazy for even mentioning it.

I have to believe I am not the only one. Sure, you have made it to the tournament every year for the last decade or so, but when you get knocked out in the first round most of the time, is that really something to celebrate? I'm not saying we need to win every year, but we need to at least make it to the elite eight each year.

That just seems like a given when you have a hall of fame coach like Izzo.

Maybe I am crazy. Who knows...

Lol. Now you get a feeling of what we go through daily and it is not fun. If I was you I would have checked into a hotel for the day which is how I sometimes feel here which is not practical as it is every day.

Yeah, I guess so. We have a generator, so it wasn't too bad. A hotel would have cost a couple hundred dollars here. The house never got below 66 degrees before the power came back on.

that has to be a rarity where you live. This reminded me of a time in college when a big boxing event was on pay per view and one of my friends had one of those boxes that got everything even if you didn't pay for it. He had a huge crowd of people at his house over and right when the main event was being announced he played a joke on us and cut the breaker for about a minute before he revealed it was all a gag once someone looked out the window and noticed that all the other apartments still had lights on.

Haha, that's pretty funny. It happens more than we would like, but nothing like the load shedding they get over in South Africa. Maybe twice a year if that. I think the big difference here is that they usually have it restored in a short amount of time. This one was about 8 hours total. My parents were down for about 12 hours.

I remember it being so rare that when I was in college I had one of those digital alarm clocks with the 9-volt battery backup and I didn't even use the battery. I only recall one time that this was actually a factor and since it was city-wide and only for a few minutes, the professor let us all off the hook if we were late or missed class entirely.

Ah yes, I remember those alarm clocks well. I don't think I could handle waking up to that tone these days. I'd probably have PTSD if I heard it again! We were just having a discussion the other day about what we do here at school if we lose power. Even without power the kids are almost safer here.

Every now and then a movie will have that awful sound in it and I think they do it just to get a PTSD sort of reaction out of the audience. Thank God that Groundhog Day had a Sonny and Cher song instead of that horrible wake up sound.
