NFL Week 13 Recap: The Lions are Restoring the Roar

I'll admit it, I'm a num nuts. I did a pretty poor job of taking photos this past weekend despite the large number of sporting events that were on TV. You would think I might have at least one shot of a plate of turkey with the football game in the background or something like that. I failed. I apologize.

The fact is, on Thursday, I was sitting with my wife's family getting ready to fire up the grill and watching what we all knew was going to be a tense Lions game. The Lions haven't won a thanksgiving day game since something like 2016. My brother in law was actually commenting that he remembered attending that game. Of course tickets were much cheaper back then. It's not just because of inflation either. The fact that the Lions are doing so well the past two seasons have skyrocketed the price of tickets.

I heard from an unverified source that nosebleed end zone tickets were going for over $500 per seat. Better seats were well north of $1000 per seat. Crazy stuff aye?

As I said, it was a very tense game between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears. What probably would have been a steamroll of a game any other time was a knock down drag out fight with the Lions finding themselves lucky to get a 23 to 20 victory. It was a dang close game and it appeared the Lions were going to do anything they could to piss it away in the final minutes.

The sad part is, things don't get any easier from here. The Lions have San Francisco who knocked them out of the playoffs last year I think, Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Buffalo ahead of them yet. My dream of the Lions clinching a playoff spot early could be in jeopardy. At the very least, home field advantage might e a bit more elusive than we would like.

Elsewhere in the NFL, Dallas beat New York in their Thanksgiving Day match up 27 to 20. It's actually a bit surprising the game was that close given how horrible The Giants are this year. Green Bay also had a turkey day game against Miami and they came away with the win 30 to 17.

Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room. Once again the officials did everything but hand the game to Kansas City when they faced the Raiders and won 19 to 17. Las Vegas fans have every right to be upset. This was a sham and a travesty of a game.

It actually reminds me of this commercial from back in 2004 that has a phrase which has stuck with me all these years:

It was a traveshamockery for sure! Meanwhile, Los Angeles (Chargers) rebounded from their loss last weekend to beat the Falcons 17 to 13, and Pittsburgh had a pretty exciting game against Cincinnati winning 44 to 38. You really couldn't go wrong if you had any players from those teams on your fantasy roster. Well, except maybe the defenses!

Minnesota edged out Arizona 23 to 22 which as I said before makes things a little more scary for the Lions. It actually looked like the Vikings were going to fall back a game, but the Cardinals must have had a late game meltdown.

Speaking of close games, Indianapolis beat New England 25 to 24, and Seattle took down The Jets 26 to 21. I was talking to my podiatrist this past week and he is a Jets fan, but he said he might be thinking about becoming a Lions fan since the Jets are so horrible!

Washington beat Tennessee 42 to 19, and Houston had a close win over Jacksonville 23 to 20. The Rams beat the Saints 21 to 14 and Tampa Bay bested Carolina by a field goal 26 to 23. I'm actually impressed Carolina was able to keep it that close.

Philadelphia continues to do well beating Baltimore 24 to 19, and Buffalo had a snowy win over San Francisco 35 to 10. It's crazy just how much lake effect snow they get off of Lake Erie and Huron over there.

Finally, Denver handed Cleveland another loss 41 to 32.

What does it tell you that teams in the AFC are already clinching playoff spots meanwhile the NFC is still a crap shoot. No one should ever accuse the Lions of doing things the easy way or getting a route to the playoffs handed to them.

I'm not saying it's going to be the Lions, but I definitely predict the Superbowl champion will be from the NFC this year. Unless the officials grease the way for Kansas City...

I was surprised that game was as close as it was. I would have liked to see the Lions dominate and don't really understand why they couldn't/didn't.

This is why I have never been to an NFL game and likely never will

Being longtime Lions fans we knew it wasn't going to be a cakewalk. Everyone in the house was nervous through the whole game. We knew the history of Thanksgiving day for the Lions. It could have been the Giants or Panthers and it would have been a close game. It's just the nature of the day.
