NCAA Week 4 Recap: When does basketball season start?

While I watched a little more football this weekend than I did last weekend, I almost wish I hadn't. After watching Michigan State get absolutely throttled by Minnesota this past weekend, I am starting to think that November 7th and the beginning of basketball season can't get here soon enough.

I have quite a few friends on Hive who live in Minnesota, so I am sure they aren't complaining at all, but man was it horrible. It was like watching a high school football team go up against a Division 1 college team. It was just disgraceful. I can't even talk about it anymore.

What I would rather talk about (before I get to the college football scores) actually doesn't have anything to do with football.

This past weekend my oldest niece played the first softball games of her college career. They played three games against another local college and they came out victorious in all of them. My niece pitched three innings (two of which were scoreless), and she hit really well too. It was a great start for this next part of her life.

Meanwhile, her younger sister played in a tournament with her new team on Sunday. There were a couple of close games, but they ended up sweeping the tournament and winning every single game they played. There is a really cool app by Dicks Sporting Goods called Game Changer that lets you watch the action in real time and sometimes live if the team broadcasts it.

We were able to watch pretty much every game and we even got to see her hit a home run! Being able to follow her even when we are four hours away is such a great feeling. I am so glad that she made the decision to switch teams and can finally play up to her potential with this new team!

Alright, onto the scores!

Probably one of the biggest stories of the weekend would have to be the #5 Clemson/#22 Wake Forest match up. It took two overtimes for the Tigers to take down the Demon Deacons with a final score of 51 to 45. Talk about having grit till the end!

#4 Michigan beat Maryland 34 to 27, big deal. I actually watched this game and what you need to realize is it was a lot closer than the score would lead you to believe. Michigan was playing pretty crappy the whole game quite honestly. It wasn't until the very end after the Maryland QB got hurt that they were able to push forward.

I am obviously biased, but I don't think there is any way U of M deserves to be a top 5 team. Nope, not even close.

Auburn and Missouri (both unranked) went into overtime, The Tigers came away with the win over The Tigers (funny how that worked out right?). It seems like colleges could maybe work a little harder to come up with unique mascots. There are only so many breeds of jungle cat out there right?

Texas and Texas Tech went into overtime too. The Red Raiders came away with the win over the Longhorns.

Western Kentucky might be a team to look out for this year. I am not saying they are going to make it to the College Football Playoff, but they are building a pretty impressive resume for themselves. Perhaps if they were to expand things they might have a chance, but we all saw how hard it was for Cincy to get in last year and what the result ended up being.

Navy and East Carolina also took their game into two overtimes. I don't think anyone probably cares about that one as much as Clemson/Wake Forest though.

I think #7 Kentucky might be a fun team to watch this year. I feel like this is the highest they have been ranked in a while. Clearly I don't put much stock in the rankings based on my earlier comments, but I have always had a bit of an affinity for Kentucky. My sister used to live just outside Lexington and it was always fun to visit.

#20 Arkansas versus #17 Texas A&M looks like it was a good game with The Aggies edging out the Razorbacks by two points.

Meanwhile, #25 Kansas State taking down #18 Oklahoma was likely a bit of a shocker for some people.

Looking at the other scores from the Big 10, I have a little more faith that The Spartans might be able to turn things around this year. There aren't nearly as many teams ranked in the top 25 as there have been in the past. The season is early though.

Northwestern had an embarrassing loss to Miami of Ohio, and it looks like lucky for Nebraska they were off this week otherwise they likely would have lost too.

Michigan State is likely going to have a tough go of it at Maryland next weekend. Especially if Tagovailoa is back in action. It could be a rough weekend!
