NCAA Top 25 Recap. There will be a new #1

I never really noticed before just how crazy this time of year can be in terms of sports. You've got college football finishing up, NFL getting exciting, NBA, NHL, and now the World Cup has added a whole other layer on top of all of that.
My weekend was full of sports to be sure.
Was yours?
Friday night there was only one top 25 game. If you remember, I said it could be interesting and that I might put some money on Washington to beat Gonzaga. Well, I was wrong, it wasn't exciting and luckily I didn't put any money on Washington. They ended up losing by 17 points.
Meanwhile, I was busy watching my niece play for her high school varsity team. It's been awesome watching how much she has grown over the past year. She was playing freshman, junior varsity, and varsity last year. This year she made the varsity team, but they have her playing some quarters in JV to keep her fresh.
She doesn't score a lot of points, but she is a defensive beast on the court. If she could just be a little more aggressive, I think she would be a force to be reckoned with.
Her team won by the way, so that was pretty awesome to watch. They have been struggling a bit this year. It is crazy how many of the fundamentals of basketball have been forgotten. She has quite a few players on her team who just sit and watch after shooting a three. I blame Curry for that. The problem is, yours aren't always going to go in like Curry's, so you have to follow your shot.
I see this happening a lot at the college level too. No one follows their shot. If just one team started doing that, they would pretty much run the board(s).

Saturday brought us 15 games in the top 25. It was a pretty exciting day. Even though they aren't in the top 25, I spent a good part of my evening watching Michigan State play against Brown. Make no mistake, this should have been a runaway game for the Spartans, but given how they have been playing at times, you never quite know. It was nice to see them firing on all cylinders and to see some of their bench players really stepping up.
Saturday morning I was able to watch my niece play a JV game for her high school. She did amazing. She gets quite a bit more playing time on the junior varsity team than she does the varsity team. She also seems a bit more confident about taking shots. I got to watch her drain at least two three point shots in that game. If only she would follow her shot now...
Unranked Penn State made quite a show of taking down #17 Illinois on Saturday. It was pretty awesome to watch. It was almost like they couldn't miss. What a big win for the Nittany Lions on the road.
Speaking of big wins, you may have guessed by my title for this post that #1 Houston lost this past weekend. #8 Alabama took down #1 Houston 71 to 65. I actually had a feeling Bama might win that one based on their performance in the tournament they played against MSU. So confident was my feeling that I put some money on it. You will read more about that on Thursday though!
I would be remiss to not point out that unranked Nebraska made a heck of a game for #4 Purdue taking them into overtime and just falling short 62 to 65. Well done Nebraska for almost pulling off the win. This may not be the last we hear from the Cornhuskers.
Unranked Saint Mary's took down #22 San Diego State, and unranked Memphis beat #11 Auburn. Finally, to round out the upsets from Saturday, unranked BYU beat #21 Creighton 83 to 80.
I should also point out, #14 Indiana fell to a #10 Arizona team that might be worth keeping your eye on. I have a feeling they might find themselves in the top 5 at some point.
The rough times for the Big 10 continued on Sunday as #7 Tennesse beat #13 Maryland and #23 Mississippi State beat unranked Minnesota. There was only one other top 25 game on Sunday and it was not an upset.
There should only be a handful of out of conference games before teams dive 100% into their conference schedules.
Then the real fun begins!
