Have We Lost The Plot?

I'm going to go a bit off tangent today and write what I am going to call a "sports adjacent" post from this account. As many of you know, the Superbowl took place on Sunday this past weekend. For me, it was a really great game with Kansas City getting blown out and the officials left to call what was a pretty clean game. In fact, the controversy from the past weekend had absolutely nothing to do with the reffing of the game and it had everything to do with the halftime show.

Which seems about part for the course over the last five to ten years. I don't know the exact year, but a while ago Apple Music took over the reins for the halftime show. In that span of time, fans have seen a shift from rock acts to more hip hop and R&B acts for the halftime show. This can be attributed to a couple of factors from what I can tell.

First, we are just getting old. Nobody wants to see an ancient Steven Tyler running around the stage trying not to have a heart attack. Remember that show? While some of the younger generation might appreciate those older bands who we used to see perform, it's not indicative of the kind of music they listen to today, and I am sorry to tell you boomer that you are slowly becoming the smaller population.

Second, from what it appears, the NFL is largely comprised of players who aren't white. Sure, there are a lot of white players, but they certainly aren't the majority (take your great replacement theory elsewhere). It's just a fact, so given that and the make up of the fan base, they are just catering to what the masses want. I'm sure they have tons of demographics and data showing that a halftime show by Kendrick Lamar is going to be much better received by the masses than one by The Eagles.

Personally, I thought it was a really good show. I didn't know all the songs and I didn't understand all the words, but it was subtle, it told a story, and for me it was almost like watching a Broadway musical. It's pretty clear that Kendrick is an excellent story teller.

Of course, I knew it was only a matter of time before my Web 2.0 platforms started blowing up with people debating how horrible or good the show was. Guess what, it fell pretty much the exact way you would expect. My white conservative friends mostly hated it, my white and other race liberal friends were more accepting of it. The liberal friends who didn't enjoy it were pretty much all white.

Which honestly is fine. Why do we have to bring race or politics into it at all, but the fact remains, if you don't like it, don't watch. Unless you are at a bar or at the game and you can't control it, you don't have to watch it. Honestly, if you keep watching it, I think you are only doing it so you can complain about how horrible it was.

I think what drives me really crazy is the number of local and national TV stations that were posting on their social media asking people what they thought of the show. You know people are going to be divided, you know the only way this is going to end is in an argument, so why would you even ask.

I told @mrsbozz, it's like giving a kid something sharp knowing they are going to poke another kid with it, but you give it to them anyway because you think it will be fun to see the reaction. It's reckless.

Meanwhile, there was a football game on this weekend too. Remember that?

Isn't that what this is supposed to be all about?
