Flipping the Script

I'm not sure anyone could have predicted what was going to happen this past weekend in the world of college football. Sure, you might have gotten one or two of the games but even the games that looked like they might be close bucked the trend.

Then you have the games you thought were going to be a blowout and they actually made a decent show of it.

I'm a bit on the fence about college football after this weekend. I didn't get to watch my Michigan State Spartans due to the game only being broadcast on Peacock Network. Sure, I could have tried to use a free trial, but I'm not a fan of playing that game. Especially for a match up that I knew was probably going to be a bloodbath.

Spoiler Alert:

I was right

It happens occasionally....

Virginia Tech vs. #8 Miami. What can I say, one of those games that you might have guessed was going to be a blowout. Instead, we got a heck of a showing by Virginia Tech just falling short of the victory 34 to 38.

I started watching the Oklahoma State/Kansas State game on Saturday morning. After the first couple of possessions, it honestly looked like this was going to be a good game. I switched away to watch the Minnesota/Michigan game and before I knew it, Kansas State had screamed ahead of the Cowboys. This game wasn't even close.

Then we have the aforementioned Minnesota/Michigan game. You might have expected Michigan to totally demolish the Golden Gophers in the Little Brown Jug game, but Minnesota held their own. This actually gives me a bit of hope for when Michigan State and Michigan meet up. I honestly don't know how Michigan can still be ranked in the top 10 after nearly falling to a Minnesota team that is 2-3 on the season.

It's s safe to assume folks in Lexington were partying well into the night after Kentucky's huge upset win over Ole Miss. I see that loss dropped Ole Miss down into the #12 spot. I thought about betting on this game. Sure enough I should have. You know if I would have though, they would have lost. That's usually the way it goes...

#17 BYU had a huge win over Baylor down in Texas 34 to 28. They keep playing like this we might see them in that group of 12 at the end of the season. Wisconsin has been having a bit of tough luck this season and Saturday was no exception with a 21 to 38 loss against a now #11 USC team.

Auburn gave #19 Oklahoma a run for their money, but weren't able to seal the deal and they ended up losing 21 to 27. Texas A&M edged out Arkansas by four points 21 to 17 and now neither of them find themselves in the top 25.

#14 Notre Dame had a scrape against #22 Louisville but were able to come away with a 31 to 24 victory.

#2 Texas had a rough start against Mississippi from what I remember as I was flipping through the channels. It seems they got things on track and took a 35 to 13 win.

As I mentioned, #3 Ohio State came into East Lansing and demolished Michigan State 38 to 7. I'm actually just glad we scored at least 7. That's very impressive as far as I am concerned. #7 Penn State had a pretty thrilling game against #24 Illinois. Don't let the 21 to 7 score fool you, it was actually a really close game.

The one most people are talking about though is the #5 Georgia vs. #1 Alabama game. Bama slingshotted themselves to the top stop with a 41 to 34 throttling of Georgia. It actually wasn't as close of a game as it looks. Alabama was in the drivers seat the whole time. I wouldn't let the final score fool you.

Finally, in other big upsets, the Arizona win over #18 Utah 23 to 10 is pretty impressive as well. I know there are some fans out there, so I'd also like to point out that Nebraska beat Purdue 28 to 10.

I thought about betting on this game. Sure enough I should have.

This is how almost all of my betting goes. If I am thinking of a bet but don't do it, it always turns out the way I was thinking. If I DO bet, it goes the other way.

Great weekend of football though, lots of greats stuff. Thanks for the Nebraska plug at the end haha. They dropped out of the top 25 earlier than I thought they would!

Yep, that's the way it is for me all the time too. I wouldn't be shocked if they aren't finished in the top 25 though. I think they are building something good out there. The next couple of weeks are going to be rough for Sparty.

it's been a long road for Big Red so yeah, I hope even if they don't finish in the top 25 that it can be a year that they are building and hopefully using this spot near the top to do some heavy recruiting as well. It's gotta be a tough sale getting people to go to college in Nebraska though. not the most exciting place!

I think it's even harder now with NIL. It's definitely forcing a lot of colleges to go outside their normal recruiting lanes. Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State are so close to each other that if they are forced to look at the same pools, Michigan State would never have a chance. The new coach giving us a line to the west coast could be a really good thing.
