Bust out your brackets

In case you missed it, there was a little bit of basketball on this past weekend. Things are reaching a frenetic pace heading into the national tournament with the conference tournaments happening over the last several days. It was a mad rush to the end of the regular season and a lot of jockeying to see where things would shake out. Teams on the bubble were giving everything they had to hopefully win their conference tournament and get an automatic spot in the bracket.

I'll be honest, things didn't really go the way I had hoped over the weekend, but you just have to deal with it and move on at the end of the day. I'll be focusing mainly on the Big Ten because that's near and dear to me obviously...

Michigan State started off well after a two round bye beating Oregon 74 to 64. Meanwhile, Wisconsin beat UCLA 86 to 70, Maryland beat Illinois 88 to 65, and Michigan beat Purdue 86 to 68. I was a bit disappointed by the performance of Purdue. I really wanted Michigan to get bounced out early. Unfortunately the universe had other plans.

Saturday came along and Wisconsin had a very close three point victory over Michigan State. I was pretty disappointed by that, but I still had hope that Maryland would spank Michigan and make my day a little better. That wasn't the case and Michigan had a very close 1 point victory over Maryland 81 to 80.

That just left the conference tournament championship game on Sunday with Wisconsin facing Michigan. After their great performance against Michigan State the day before, I didn't feel like Wisconsin had much left in the tank for their game against Michigan.

Likewise, despite what others might tell you, I don't think Michigan is that strong of a team. The rankings in the national tournament would reflect that. As I said, the universe had other plans and Michigan won the tournament championship 59 to 53 over Wisconsin. I would like to point out that shouldn't be confused with the regular season championship won by Michigan State.

No doubt you will hear Michigan fans claiming their team is the conference champion. That would be inaccurate. They are the conference tournament champion. The regular season championship was won by Michigan State with a three game margin over Michigan. It's one of those instate rival semantics things that people knowingly do on purpose just to get under the skin of their opponents.

Sports are silly am I right?

Meanwhile, Yale one the Ivy League tournament, VCU won the Atlantic 10 conference tournament, Florida won the SEC conference tournament, and Memphis won the AAC conference tournament.

In case you missed it, Duke also won the ACC conference tournament.

After the bracket reveal show last night I got mine put all together. I will share it in my post tomorrow, so be sure to check back!
