Be Better

My wife and I were sitting around on this past Sunday after a busy morning and I decided to see what was on the TV. @mrsbozz had been taking a nap and I had just finished up watching some of the Little League World Series (I lie, I was half asleep myself), and I noticed that there was a WNBA game on.

I've talked about this before, but given the recent events of the weekend, I think it needs to be brought up again.

We happened to be watching an Indiana Fever game. In case you aren't familiar, the Indiana Fever is the team that selected University basketball star Caitlin Clark in the first round of the draft. She got off to a slow start, but she has been adjusting to the WNBA fairly well.

At least in some respects. I read an article the other day that said Clark is just two technical fouls away from getting suspended for something like three games. People will probably it is an intense game and emotions get high when you are playing at this level, but I have a huge issue with this.

Caitlin Clark needs to be better. In the same space of time that I saw that article, I saw another one from an official claiming that Clark's behavior is an insult to the game of basketball. I can't say I disagree with that.

If I remember right, you need something like seven technical fouls before you get suspended. That means she has done something so egregious five times that she is now just two away from getting suspended.

First off, your only hurting your team by acting like that. In fact, you can simply jump over to YouTube and search for "Caitlin Clark Technical" or "Caitlin Clark Reactions" and you will see just how ridiculous her behavior is.

I snagged a screenshot a while ago with these statistics on it:

Caitlin Clark sold more jerseys in one day than the Dallas Cowboys sold all of last year for their entire team.

You know who is buying those jerseys? Predominately young ladies who look up to Caitlin Clark and everything she has accomplished up to now.

Having played several years of basketball herself at the high school level, my wife was appalled at the sportsmanship presented by Clark in the last game.

You can debate the fact that kids shouldn't look up to athletes all you want, but the fact is they do and for that very reason they need to be better. Especially when they are on the court or playing field.

I admit, there are bad refs and there are bad calls for sure, but the time for excuses is over. We are building a society of kids who can't handle adversity and disappointment in a healthy way. That needs to stop and the examples these kids are looking up to have a duty to be better.

That's my opinion anyway.
