A Weekend of Olympics
It might not be the Olympic flame, but @mrsbozz and I sat out on our patio this weekend and enjoyed the flames from our propane fire pit. Though we likely would have preferred to be camping this past weekend, it was a nice change.
If you have been living under a rock, for the rest of the world, the Olympic games have been taking place in Paris, France (and other locations) over the past weekend. It's actually pretty crazy just how quickly things take place when it comes to the Olympics.
Just think about all the time leading up to these two weeks and now for some people it's already all over. I can't imagine being one of those athletes who have their event in the first weekend and then they are done. Wouldn't that be crazy?
For example, fencing is already over I think, so are some of the swimming events as well as synchronized diving. At least I think so anyway. Right now I am watching mountain biking which is actually pretty cool. They really did a great job of putting a course together for these folks.
Right now it looks like the guy from France is going to run away with it, meanwhile the fight between silver and bronze is quite tight. I take that back. The guy from Great Britain surged forward and took the lead. France comes in second.
As of right now, the US is leading the medal count with a total of 12. China comes in second with 9, but I should point out that China has more gold medals than the US at five versus our 3. France is actually tied with China at 9, and Japan comes in fourth with 8.
It's been a tough games for some of the athletes from France. I saw the gymnastics team had a bit of an implosion the other day which is heartbreaking for them. They won't make it to the medal round unless they do it as individuals.
On the other hand, athletes from France like that young male swimmer are dominating. There wasn't anyone near him in the event I watched the other day.
I have to point out that I was wrong earlier. I thought that women's softball was going to be an event in the Olympics this year. Turns out it isn't until 2028 that it will be an event. Meanwhile they thought it was a good idea to add break dancing. Explain that one to me....
Did you know they have trap shooting in the Olympics? Now that's something I can get behind though I don't really feel it should be an Olympic sport. I think it's interesting to note how many of these events are things that you would expect rich nobles to do. Rowing, Fencing, Trap Shooting, Badminton. I can appreciate the introduction of Break Dancing to buck that trend, but maybe they should have went with something a bit more relevant.
I think what I am most excited for is Volleyball and Rugby, though the basketball has been kind of fun to watch and I continue to be impressed by these water polo folks. I can't imagine how grueling it must be. Treading water for over an hour while being tugged and pulled in every direction. Talk about strength, stamina, and endurance. It's mind boggling.

Do people still play Badminton? I find some of these events absolutely confounding.
