A Great Win!
After a really rough weekend, my nieces high school team was back in action yesterday. They spent Easter weekend at a tournament in the southern part of Ohio. They played three games in that tournament and were outscored something like 40 to 1 when you combine all the games together.
Not a great showing for them, but from what I hear the competition was really tough and they probably shouldn't have been entered into that tournament in the first place.
Given how bad the weekend went, it would be understandable for them to come back on Monday and be a little defeated. I wouldn't have blamed them one bit if morale was so low that they dropped their game last night as well.
That just goes to show you how resilient these ladies are, because that absolutely wasn't the case last night.
It was a relatively close game going into the sixth inning. Each team would either tie it up or push ahead by just a little bit until the score was something like 5 to 3 in the other teams favor. After a couple of bad pitches from the other teams pitcher and some great hits by my nieces team, the score was in their favor 6 to 5.
Seriously, you can't make this stuff up, it was bottom of the sixth (HS softball games go 7 innings), two outs, bases loaded, and my niece was up to bat. I'm pretty sure she was down two strikes as well when she finally got the perfect pitch.
She hit a rope into right field that went past the infield and then the right fielder mishandled it and it went to the wall. My niece made it all the way to third and scored three RBI's to open the game up and give them an 9 to 5 lead.
On the next batter a wild pitch was thrown and my niece was able to steal home making the score 10 to 5. In case you are keeping score, that's four runs all attributed to her. She may as well of hit a grand slam in her at bat.
After the next batter got out, the team quickly got the final three outs they needed to put this game away with a final score of 10 to 5. They have been struggling this year, so it was really awesome to see them finish strong and not give up on this game.
In case you can't tell, I am more than a little proud.
I'm so excited because my other niece has some college games today. I plan on watching those as soon as they start streaming. Their team has been doing better now that they are playing their regular conference games. My niece has even been getting some time on the field.
I have a feeling before too long she is going to start seeing some time on the mound again as well. It has been a huge transition for her going from high school ball to college ball, but she is handling it like a champ. I see really great things for her in the future!
Tigers are back in action today, so stay tuned for an update on that tomorrow!
