A Completely Different Level
I was flipping through the channels last night when I happened to notice that the Indiana Fever game was being streamed on Amazon Prime. I jumped over to that service to check out the home debut of Caitlin Clark. This wasn't her professional game. She has played at least one or two on the road, but this was the first game she played in front of her "new" home crowd.
In front of a sold out crowd of 17,000+ fans last night, Clark took to the court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the first time as a member of the Indiana Fever.
I have to admit, the performance I saw was pretty lackluster. In fact, it was only about twelve minutes into the game that Clark got put on the bench. People don't think about the WNBA as being professional basketball a lot of times, but it is. Don't let the skewed salaries fool you, it is professional basketball.
Clark is now a bright eyed university graduate competing against grown women who have been doing this for years. I'm actually kind of surprised that Clark is already a starter on the team. It seems like you should need to earn that position. Then again, there is a reason the Fever had the first round draft pick this year.
It would be because they sucked last year. In case you couldn't figure it out.
In the portion of the game that I watched, Clark wasn't getting any of the space she needed to drain the threes that she is so famous for. There has been a lot of talk about her turning over the ball in the early season. In the game before this one she had something like ten turnovers.
@mrsbozz pointed out a lot of that can be attributed to the fact that she is playing with a new team now. Passes that her old teammates on Iowa knew to anticipate are falling out of bounds or into the hands of the opponents on the new team. They will figure it out, I'm sure of that, but right now it's pretty obvious that Clark is still trying to play at the university level.
The WNBA is a totally different level.
The Indiana Fever fell to the New York Liberty 66 to 102 last night with Clark only scoring 9 points.
Meanwhile, action kicks off at noon today in the college softball world series for division I universities. I will for sure be watching some of those games while I try to get some work done here at my desk. Monday I will recap all the action from the weekend.
It's going to be a flurry of activity as the 64 teams are whittled down to 16 for the super regionals.
On the division II side of things. Travecca was knocked out of the running in the super regionals. We are now down to the double elimination semi finals. I don't really recognize any of the teams that are left, so I am just going to focus on division I. I'll be sure to tell you the overall winner when one is determined though.
