The Day of Reckoning: 100km, the Dodentocht, and Why We Walk

avatar

Today’s not your average day of strolling around the neighborhood. This is what every single one of those daily walks has been building up to—the 100km Deathtrail, or Dodentocht. Yep, 100 kilometers, on foot, with nothing but determination, a trusty pair of shoes, and some serious grit to get through it.

We’re only 20k steps in, and it’s hard to believe that’s just 1/10th of what lies ahead. But as I glance around at the sea of fellow walkers, all gearing up for the same monumental challenge, I’m reminded of why we do this. It’s about pushing boundaries, testing limits, and seeing just how far we can go.

But it’s not all about the struggle. This trail offers up some of the most breathtaking views—like this one, where the sun peeks through the trees, casting a warm glow over the path ahead. It’s moments like these that make every step worth it.

The road ahead is long, but with every kilometer, we’re not just getting closer to the finish line; we’re gaining something intangible—strength, resilience, and the knowledge that no matter how tough it gets, we can keep moving forward.

Here’s to the next 90 kilometers—let’s see what we’re made of!

Wow, that is a lot of people! You're walking 100K over how much time? I wish you massive reservoirs of energy, drive, and fortitude for your quest! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Yes !INDEED ! About 13000 people started the walk, about 9000 actually finished. The goal is to finish in less then 24 hours, and due to some logistical issues it was extended to 26 hours. I finished in 22:21, so not bad, especially since my only real goal was starting, and finishing would be nice :-D

Thank you! I didn't care about the time while walking, my goals actually were, having the courage to start, exceeding the 35km (which was my longest walk up till then), finishing, finishing in less then 24hrs.
So all goals reached!!!! :-D
Now for next year.... !LOLZ

Of course, you're very welcome! That's good, focusing on the time would have taken your focus off of where you were and what you were doing. That's really wondeful about smashing all your goals for the death walk! Bravo! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Oh, fantastic! Those sound great! With running, just make sure that you're running on the balls of your feet, and not your heels, as your joints, especially your knees, will appreciate it! I wish you indomitable success on these new goals, @borniet! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Yeah, already “broke” one of my knees before. Due to some bad shoes and technique. So not sure yet of what my new goals will be !INDEED

Yes, improper shoes or technique can definitely have an adverse effect! The basic idea is not to be pounding your feet, especially your heels, down on the surface as you're running, that's why you run on the balls of your feet, because it acts as a shock-obsorber. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Thank you very much! Indeed, quite a challenge! I didn't nearly take as many photo's as I expected to, or as I normally do, as the first 40km were during the night, and after that I needed to focus all my attention and energy on finishing. But got a nice when I crossed the finish line though! ;-)
